Name:: Computer Networks I

The document is a computer networks exam containing multiple problems related to subnetting, network addressing, and fragmentation. It includes a diagram of a network and asks students to design an addressing scheme, determine how many fragments will be generated for a file transfer between devices, and provide information on fragment headers.

Computer Networks I
FINAL EXAM – PART 1 MAY 29, 2018

NO calculators allowed
Time allowed: 1:30 hours
Instructions
Put down your name in the first page soon as you have received the exam.

Question 1. Terminology (4 Points)

Fill in each blank with the term corresponding to the definition. A wrong answer penalty of -0,2
points applies. No answer = no penalty.

1. A______________ is a set of rules that governs data communication.

2. A _________________ connection provides a dedicated link between two devices.

3. In the OSI protocol architecture, the ______________ layer is the one responsible of
delivering the message from the source to the end destination.

4. In the OSI protocol architecture, the ______________ layer is the one responsible of routing
the packets through the network.

5. The __________________ service translates hostnames to IP addresses.

6. The ___________ is used to find the MAC address of the computer based on the IP address

7. A __________ is a data communication system within a building, plant, campus, or between

nearby buildings.

8. _________________ defines how a particular pattern to be interpreted, and what action is to

be taken based on that interpretation.

9. In a ________________ connection, more than two devices can share a link.

10. ________________ is the protocol suite for the current Internet.

PROBLEM 1. Subnetting (1,5 points)

A service provider has been given the IP address 82.0.0.0. The service provider must define 500
different subnets. Show your work.

a) What is the mask to be used enabling the maximum number of hosts per subnet? How many
different subnet IP addresses will she be able to define with this mask? (0,5 points)

b) Fill the table below with the IP addresses of the first three IP subnet addresses, and the last
two valid IP addresses. (1 point)

Subnet Subnet IP address range Broadcast

number IP address IP address

PROBLEM 2. Subnetting (2,5 points)
In this problem, you should refer to Figure 1. Assume that you have been given the IP address 201.25.42.0.
The network consists of three routers, three switches, six PCs and three laptops connected to an AP. Design
a network-addressing scheme that will supply the minimum number of subnets required. Circle each subnet
on the figure and answer the questions below. You should hand-in a separate piece of paper showing
the details of your work.

Figure 1. Network for Problems 2 and 3.

A. Questions (1 point)
Circle each subnet on the figure and fill the following items:

Address Class ______________________________________

Custom subnet mask ______________________________________

Minimum number of subnet needed _______________

Maximum number of hosts per subnet _______________

B. Fill in the table with the information requested for each subnet (1 point)

IP subnet address Host IP address range Broadcast IP address

3
C. Assign the IP address to all the network devices (1 point)

Device/interface IP address

4
PROBLEM 3. Fragmentation (2 points)
You should refer to Figure 1. The length of the MTUs used at each link is indicated in Figure 1.
Assume that station PC_1 will be sending a 5,2 KBytes file to stations PC_6. Each packet carries
a 20-Bytes header. The ID of the first packet to be sent is set to 12. Answer the following
questions.

1. How many IP datagram will PC_1 generate? ___________________

2. Provide the values of the following fields for each one of the IP packets generated by PC_1

ID Number Length M Offset

3. For each of the packets listed in the previous table, show the information of the fragments to be
generated by Router 1.

ID Number Length M Offset

5
4. Does any other router perform a packet fragmentation (yes/no)?

If yes, indicate which one ____________ and list using a table similar to the previous one, the id
number, length and the values of the M and offset fields of each fragment created by the router.
