Steering Angle Neutral Position Learning

NOTE:
If the steering angle neutral position is cleared, do the steering angle neutral position learning procedure.
The steering angle neutral position is cleared whenever you do any of these actions:

- EPS motor/control unit replacement, removal, or installation.

- 12 volt battery terminal is disconnected from the 12 volt battery.

- The power is disconnected from the EPS control unit.

- The power supply voltage for the EPS control unit is decreased.

If the steering angle neutral position is cleared, the VSA indicator, VSA OFF indicator, Low tire pressure/TPMS indicator,
and CMBS indicator (if equipped) will come on.
There are two learning methods, one using the HDS and the other without the HDS.
The learning cannot be done when the EPS indicator is on.

cardiagn.com
1. Steering Angle Neutral Position - Learn

Without using the HDS

1. Drive the vehicle on a straight section at speeds above 9

mph (15 km/h) until indicators go off.

NOTE:
If the indicators go off, the learning is completed.
When drive the vehicle on stable straight, the learning
will complete for about 10 seconds.
Difficult situations for learning are below:

Driving on a non straight section.

Driving on a rough road.

Driving in 9 mph (15 km/h) or less.

Driving on a slope road.

Rapid acceleration and deceleration.

If the learning does not complete, check the EPS

system.

2. Be sure the indicators do not come on.

With using the HDS

1. Do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization.

Steering Column Inspection

Check of Tilting Force

1. Check of Tilting Force

1. Set the steering wheel in the straight ahead driving position,

and loosen the lock lever fully.

2. Attach a commercially available spring scale (A) to the

highest point of the steering wheel, and tilt the steering
column to the lowest position.

3. Pull the spring scale straight up, and read the force
required to move the steering column.

4. Attach the spring scale to the lowest point of the steering

wheel.

cardiagn.com
5. Pull the spring scale straight down, and read the force
required to move the steering column.

Tilting force (upward/downward):

Standard: 69 N (7.0 kgf, 15.5 lbf) max.

6. If the measurement is higher than the specified, replace the

steering column.

Check of Telescoping Force

1. Check of Telescoping Force

1. Set the steering wheel in the straight ahead driving position,

and loosen the lock lever fully.

2. Attach a commercially available spring scale (A) to the

center point of the steering wheel as shown.

3. Pull the spring scale, and read the force required to move
the steering column during telescoping out.

Telescoping force:
Standard: 106 N (10.8 kgf, 23.8 lbf) max.

4. If the measurement is higher than specified, replace the

steering column.

locked position three to five times, then release the lock
lever. Adjust the steering column to the center tilt position
and also to the full telescopic out position, and hold the
steering wheel.

2. Using a commercially available push-pull gauge, push up

the lock lever 10 mm (0.39 in) in from its end, and measure
the force required to move the lock lever.

Lock lever force:

Standard: 82 N (8.4 kgf, 18.4 lbf) max.

3. If the measurement is higher than specified, replace the

steering column.
