WORSHIP WORKSHOP LESSON
THE KEYBOARD
NOTES:
 This is a Keyboard or a Piano:
1

 We have 12 notes, and each note has a corresponding

letter.
 In music, we only use 7 Letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, & G
 All of the letters have Sharps, except for E and B. So,
we have: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, and A#.
WORSHIP WORKSHOP
Exercise! NOTES:
1. Remember the letter of each key in the Piano.
2. Be able to point the position of each letter/key in
the Piano.

 Now that you are familiar with the notes and keys of the
Piano, we are ready to make some chords!

What is a Chord?
 A Chord is simply the combination of three or more
notes/keys played simultaneously. On the piano, this
means you push down more than one key at the same
time.

THERE ARE 2 MAIN TYPES OF CHORDS

1. Major Chord - is a chord based on major scale, and is

defined by three notes. A song that has many MAJOR
chords create joyful feeling to the hearer.

To make a Major Chord using your right hand, place your

thumb in the first note of the chord and press it down. We
will use the C Major chord as an example.
Exercise!
 Count 1-2-3-4 again, but instead of clapping, play a
chord for each number. Let’s use the chord ‘C’.
 For each cycle of 1-2-3-4, try changing the chord.
You can use C-G-Am-F.
 Let’s try it again, but this time, play the chord/s only
on every 1st and 3rd count.

From the key pressed using your right thumb, count 4

keys from it and press the 4th key using your index finger.

From the second key you pressed using your index

finger, count 3 keys from it and press the key using your
middle finger.
LESSON
NOW, YOU HAVE A C MAJOR CHORD! We pressed C, E, and
Basic Rhythm in Playing the
G keys.

2. Minor Chord - is a chord based on minor scale, and

defined by three notes. A minor chord produces a sad and Rhythm is essentially the timing of all the notes that

key/note half-step backwards.

Let’s try it again, but this time, clap only on every 1 st

and 3rd count.

In this case, it is the E key. If we move the second

finger or the second note backwards, the E will now become
D#.
KEY OF “F”

So instead of pressing C, E, and G, you will press C, D#,

and G. AND NOW, YOU HAVE A MINOR CHORD!

What is a Sharp or Flat?

- The difference between sharp and flat is actually quite

simple: sharp is when you raise the note in half step and
flat is when you lower the note in half step.

- In every Sharp Chord there is a corresponding Flat chord.

(Remember, kids! B and E don’t have Sharp “#” Chords)

Chord families are the chords that fit together in a
particular key. A song is composed of a family chord to
create a harmonious sound. Lastly, the particular key of
family chords in a song will depend on the voice range of a
singer.
