Free Response: Write out complete answers to the following questions. Show your work since
it allows us to be generous with partial credit.
(10pts) 7. At a carnival, you come across a game where you use an air cannon to shoot a small ball
through a small falling ring to win a prize. The ring is suspended the ceiling and suddenly
dropped straight down from a height of 2.5 m above the air cannon. You are a horizontal
distance of 2.0 metres from the ring. If the air cannon is fixed at an angle of 30◦ , how long
after the ring begins to drop should you fire the cannon to hit the ring?

8. A plate falls straight, hits the ground and breaks into three pieces. The pieces have masses 50,
100 and 150 g respectively. The first two pieces are found at 1.2 î m and (−0.2 î + 0.5 ĵ) m from
the impact point after sliding along a floor with coefficent of kinetic friction µ = 0.1. Where is
the third piece relative to the point of impact?

(6pts ) 9. A small, solid, uniform-density ball is shot from point A so that it rolls without slipping along
a horizontal path, up a ramp, and onto a horizontal plateau as shown below. It then leaves
the plateau and lands on a surface a horizontal distance d = 6.00 m from the right edge of the
plateau. The vertical heights are h1 = 5.00 m and h2 = 1.60 m.
(a) What is the speed of the ball at point B? (2 pts.)
(b) With what speed must the ball be shot with at point A (4 pts.)

(10pts) 10. Consider a rigid diving board of length L and mass M . The diving board is supported on a
pivot point a length L/4 from one end and has a spring with a spring constant k positioned a
distance L/2 along its length. If no one is on the diving board, the board is horizontal. If a
person of mass m stands at the end of the board over the water, what angle will the board make

with the horizontal?

10 pts
(10pts) 11. A block of mass m initially rests on top of two solid, cylindrical rollers, each with mass M and
radius R. A rope exerts a tension force T begins pulling on the block and the block and rollers
move forward without slipping. What is the acceleration of the block once the force is applied?

10 pts
(10pts) 12. Two marbles of mass m1 = 5 g and m2 = 8 g are rolling along a horizontal track with initial
velocities of v1 = 0.3 î m/s and v2 = 0.2 î m/s. After they collide (elastically), what are their
velocities?
