BAB I
A. Background of the Research Question
Writing is one of the most important things you do in college Gebhardt
and Dawn Rodrigues (1989: 1)(1). Because writing is one of the skills or
language skills that has the highest level of difficulty compared to other
language skills, namely the ability to listen, speak and read. That's because to
make a writing requires ideas, ideas, imagination and creativity in order to
produce beautiful written works that can be enjoyed by readers. Therefore,
writing is a very important activity at school, and to improve students' writing
skills, of course they need media and practical methods.
According to Eric Gould, Robert Diyanni, and William Smith (1989:
18)(2), writing is a creative act, the act of writing is creative because it
requires to interpret or make sense of something: an experience, a text, an
event. There is a saying that experience is the best teacher, writing is the same
in order to increase writing skills, it takes creativity and experience in writing,
therefore students need to be trained so that their writing skills are getting
better and better. To produce good writing, you must not only pay attention to
technique but also the type of writing that is made, because writing has
guidelines or guidelines in writing.
Procedure text is a text that explains the complete, clear, and detailed
steps on how to do something (Kosasih (2014: 67)(3). In everyday life we use
procedure text to provide instructions so that someone can do a job properly.
1
This type of text helps us understand what we don't know. When we creat
such texts, we help others understand what they don't already know. In the
implementation of the 2013 curriculum, procedural text learning is taught in
class VII in the first semester.
Listening skills require students to be able to master knowledge related
to the type of writing they read. Weak listening skills make it difficult for
students to identify procedural texts. Various conditions cause low listening
skills in identifying procedural texts, including low understanding of linguistic
structures and characteristics, low interest in reading, and students being less
active in learning activities. The low understanding of the structure and
linguistic features of the text is due to the fact that the material is still newly
applied. Many students are still confused and do not even understand the
structure of the text, linguistic features, and in identifying recount text.
From some of the problems or difficulties of students that have been
described, therefore the researcher provides a solution, namely by using media
assistance in the form of videos to make students more active and better
understand procedure text.
Based on the description of the background, it is necessary to do
research with the title "The Use Of Video To Improve Students' Ability In
Writing Recount Texts In Grade 7".
2
B. Reseach Questions
Based on the background of the research, several research problems
can be identified, namely as follows:
1. How is the implementation of teaching writing recount texts using
video to the seventh grade students of junior high school?
2. What are the difficulties faced by students when learning writing
recount texts using video?
3. How effective is the use of video in learning writing recount texts
to the eight grade students of junior high school?
C. Objective of the Research
Based on research questions, this study aims to identify and
examine:
1. To describe the implementation of teaching writing recount text
using video to the eight grade students of junior high school.
2. To find out the difficulties faced by students when learning writing
recount texts using video.
3. To find out the effectiveness of use of video in learning writing
recount texts to the eight grade students of junior high school.
3
D. Benefits of the Research
1. Teacher
As input for teachers and researchers in analyzing student learning
outcomes in learning to identify recount texts.
2. Student
With this research, students are expected to gain knowledge and
experience in identifying recount texts.
3. School
With this research, it is hoped that schools will provide motivation for
teachers and students to provide facilities in the teaching and learning
process.

BAB II
KEY TERM, LITERATURE REVIEW, AND HYPOTHESES
A. Key Term
1. The use of video in learning is an effort to facilitate the delivery of
information that we want to convey to students so that students can
receive information or lessons well and easily. Because with the help
of videos students can see, read also listen and write down important
information in the video, so students with any learning style can
receive lessons well.
2. Writing recount text is one of the materials in class VII, where with
material students can apply it in daily life because it discusses how to
make or do something. So students must really understand and be able
to write recount texts correctly.
3. Comparative research related to this research includes:
a. comparison of students' knowledge about recount text before and
after learning using video.
b. Comparison of student scores before and after using video.
B. Literature Review
The literature review contains a description of the theory, findings
and other research materials obtained from reference materials to be used
as the basis for research activities. The description in the literature review
is directed to develop a clear framework of thinking about solving the
5
problems that have been described previously in the formulation of the
problem.
The literature review in this study concerns the process of identifying
recount text by using learning videos that are able to make students active
in learning. In writing procedure text, students often have difficulty in
identifying procedure text. The use of video in learning can be done to
assist students in writing procedural texts. This literature review becomes
the theoretical basis that is relevant to the problem in research. Each theory
in this study will be described.
1. According to Henry Guntur Tarigan, writing is an activity of
expressing ideas or ideas by using written language as the main
medium of delivery.
According to Gebhardt and Dawn Rodrigues, understanding
writing is one of the most important things you do in school. Good
writing skills will greatly affect a person's level of success in
school, both in terms of writing reports, writing proposals or doing
assignments at school(4).
According to Mc. Crimmon, writing is an activity to explore
thoughts and feelings about a subject, determine the subject to be
written, and determine the writing technique so that people who
read the writing can understand it easily(5).
6
According to DjagoTarigan, writing is an activity to express in
writing various kinds of ideas, thoughts, feelings, opinions, or
thoughts(6).
So it can be concluded that writing is an activity of expressing,
expressing ideas or ideas in written form, and determining the
writing technique so that people who read can get information and
understand it easily.
2. According to CheppyRiyana (2007) learning video media is media
that presents audio and visuals that contain good learning messages
that contain concepts, principles, procedures, knowledge
application theory to help understanding of a learning material.
Video is a visible and heard learning material (audio visual) that
can be used to convey messages / subject matter(7).
According to CheppyRiyana (2007:6)(8) instructional video media
as teaching materials aim to:
a. Clarify and simplify the delivery of messages so as not to
be too verbalistic.
b. Overcoming the limitations of time, space, and the sensory
power of students and instructors.
c. Can be used appropriately and varied.
7
According to Heinich, Molenda, Russel 1993:188 in Rusman et al
2011:218) video can be interpreted as follows:
The primary meaning of video is the display of pictures on a
television type screen (the latin word video literally means “I see”
Any media format that employs a chatode-ray screen to present the
picture portion of the massege can be reffered to as video So it can
be concluded that video is a motion picture that contains a series of
plots and displays messages from parts of an image to achieve
learning objectives.
Video is a series of motion pictures accompanied by sound that
forms a unit that is assembled into a plot, with messages in it for
the achievement of learning objectives that are stored with the
storage process on tape or disk media (Arsyad, 2004: 36 in Rusman
et al. 2011: 218)(9) .Video is an audio-visual media that displays
motion (Sadiman, 2008:74).
So it can be concluded that learning videos are media that present
audio-visual displays that can be used to convey messages/subject
materials that aim to clarify and facilitate the delivery of messages,
and overcome the limitations of time, space, and the sensory power
of students and instructors.

C. Hypotheses
According to Kelinger, a research hypothesis is a statement that
explains the alleged relationship between two or more variables.
According to him, the hypothesis is always in the form of a declarative
sentence. The conjecture relates in general and in particular one variable to
another variable.
Hₐ : There is a relationship between writing ability and success
student learning using videos.
Hο : There is no relationship between writing ability and
student learning success using video.

BAB III
A. Methods and Design
Research methods are research plans and procedures that include steps
from broad assumptions to detailed methods of data collection, analysis, and
interpretation (Creswell, 2016)(10). The Mix Method research method is an
approach in research that combines or connects quantitative and qualitative
research methods (Creswell, 2016)(11).
The research method used to answer the problem formulation
in this research is Mix Method (exploratory sequential). Method this study
was chosen according to its characteristics because the research question to be
answered include outcomes and processes that involve combining qualitative
and quantitative data to find out how the students' ability to identify
procedural texts if the teacher uses video in learning, what obstacles are faced
by the teacher and class VII students in the learning process by using video
and how effective is the learning using video assistance. The research
conducted is a research that aims to knowing the quality and quantity of
students in learning using video. The design used is exploratory sequential.
This design is used because the research used is quality research first and then
quantity.
