Wind Energy
Wind energy is a source of clean
renewable energy. Wind energy or wind power is the process of creating electricity using the wind, or air flows that occur naturally in the earth's atmosphere. Wind turbines are used to capture energy from the wind and generate electricity. Wind Turbines Turbines can be as tall as a 20-story building and have three 200-foot (60- meter)-long blades. The wind spins the blades, which turn a shaft connected to a generator that produces electricity. Wind farms have tens and sometimes hundreds of these turbines lined up together in particularly windy spots. Smaller turbines erected in a backyard can produce enough electricity for a single home or small business. Wind Energy Pros and Cons Wind Energy Pros Wind energy is Renewable source of energy. Wind power is sustainable and cost-effective. It's a clean fuel source. Do not emit Carbon dioxide Pollutants. Wind turbines can be built on existing farms. Wind Energy Cons Wind turbines can be noisy and can sometimes adversely impact the physical environment around them. Similar to solar power, wind power is also intermittent, meaning that turbines are reliant on weather and therefore aren't capable of generating electricity 24/7. Wind Turbines are expensive and pose a Threat to Wildlife. During the construction of wind turbines, habitats can be seriously harmed and fragmented. When a wind turbine's blades move, they cause a drop in nearby air pressure. If a bat flies too close to a turbine, this drop in air pressure can damage its lungs. Scientists studied wind projects in Ontario for 10 years. They found that each wind turbine kills around 5 birds and 12 bats every year! Which countries relies mostly on Wind Energy? China is the world leader in wind energy, with over a third of the world's capacity. It boasts the world's largest onshore wind farm in Gansu Province. The US is in second place and it is particularly strong in onshore wind power. Germany has the highest installed wind capacity in Europe. India has the second highest wind capacity in Asia. Spain is a strong performer in wind covering 18% of Spain’s electricity supply. Is it safe to live near a Wind Turbines? There are millions of people in the U.S. who have experience living near wind turbines. Recent research finds that the majority of these people are positive or neutral about their local wind project. Studies have found that living near wind turbines does not pose a risk on human health. The studies looked at a range of health effects from hearing loss, nausea, and sleep disorders to dizziness, blood pressure, tinnitus, and more. Buildings can't be constructed unless the property line is at least 1,125 feet away from the tip of wind turbine. Your Task! Search the internet for a place (city/country/area) which relies mostly on wind energy? Find out why and how are they able to do so? Discuss the place’s climate and weather. Also write that if Pakistan was to use wind farming to generate electricity, which areas of the country could these farms be built in? Why?
