company are expected to decrease at a rate of 25t 3 computers per month,
where t is the time in months. The company plans to stop manufacturing the
computers when the monthly sales reach 800 computers. If initially the
monthly sales are 2 000 computers find how long the company will continue to
manufacture the computers.

(ii) An insurance company charges a customer an annual premium of $1 200 to

insure a car against theft. In the event of theft a payment of $15 000 will be
made to the customer. The probability of theft is empirically estimated to be
0  02 .

answer in simplest surd form.

(ii) The total revenue that a manufacturer receives from selling x toothbrushes is
 x 
given by R(x) dollars where R( x)  800 ln1   . The total cost of
 200 
producing x toothbrushes is given by C (x) dollars where C ( x)  300  x .

(a) Write down an expression in terms of x for the profit P x  when x

(b) Find the number of toothbrushes which should be produced and sold for
maximum profit.

(iii) It is known that 1% of a population has a particular type of cancer (C) .

When an individual is tested for this type of cancer, a POSITIVE test result (P)
suggests that the individual has the cancer and a NEGATIVE test result (N)
suggests that the individual does not have the cancer.
However, the test is not always accurate. Only 95% of individuals who have cancer
receive a positive test result, whilst 2% of individuals who do not have cancer
receive a positive test result.

(a) The tree diagram below illustrates the outcomes when an individual is
selected at random from the population and then tested for the cancer.
Copy into your writing book and complete the tree diagram, showing the
probabilities on each branch.

y-axis.

(b) Find the area of the shaded region in part (a) .

(iii) Two machines, A and B , each have 3 component parts. Machine A will stop
working if all 3 of its parts fail, whilst Machine B stops working if one or more
of its parts fails.
Failure of any part is independent of failure of any other part and for each part
the probability of failure is p where p  0  5 .

(a) Write down separate expressions in terms of p for the probability that
Machine A stops working and for the probability that Machine B stops
working.

(b) Find the value of p if the probability that Machine A stops working is
0 1 less than the probability that Machine B stops working.

(c) Manufacturing can continue only if both machines are working.

Show that the probability that manufacturing can continue is given by
 
1  p 4 1  p  p 2 .
