5-Exponential Mindset

The document discusses the differences between incremental and exponential mindsets. It explains that an exponential mindset focuses on making something different, rather than just better. It also outlines three phases that require different exponential mindset attributes: launch requires vision and comfort with uncertainty, build requires courage and patience, and grow requires agility and control. Overall, an exponential mindset is about embracing uncertainty, leveraging technology, and continuous improvement.

BAGIAN 5:

EXPONENTIAL MINDSET

Course: Sustainable Project Management

DR Edi Sofyan, B.Eng, M.Eng (Aero)

Menciptakan proyek yang monumental
Apa perbedaan antara proyek
incremental dan exponential?
It is a poor mindset,
You can not solve BIG problems with tiny
mindset!!!
Hidup bermasalah....

Hidup bahagia....

MINDSET YANG KERDIL BAHKAN TIDAK AKAN

MAMPU MENG-HANDLE MASALAH SURVIVAL?
Exponential mindset

The incremental mindset

focuses on making something
better, while the exponential
mindset is makes something
different.
Which is most important?
1. Vision and comfortable with uncertainties
2. Courage and patients
3. Agility and control

Depends on the phase you are in........

6 SALAMA SPM dimensions
• Sustainability Dimensions
• Adaptive Leadership
• Life Cycle Assessment
• Adopting Advanced Technology
• Managing, Innovation
• Assurances and control
6 dimensions of SPM
Incumbent vs Newcomer companies..
• Many companies run on defensive mindset, resist
change, KPI, Standard Operation Manuals..
• Efficiencies, effectiveness, precision, predictability
are familiar words...
• Apple success because having a STEALTH
organization at the edge of disruptive
products/services, killing the incumbent
• Many organisations have reactive immune
systems, how do we solve this?
How do we fix civilization?
• Scarcity vs Abundance mindset
• 20 more disruptive technology running at the
moment
• ExoSprint.....suppresing the immune system while
at the same time introducing the new mindset
• Exosprint-1: workshop disruptive
• Exosprint-2: Create disruptive start-up and
upgrading mothership
• Exosprint-3: Review
What to discuss?

EXPONENTIAL MINDSET -

The role of exponential mindsets vary in
each phase of : launch, grow, and expand.
1. Launch phase: Vision and Uncertainty
– Refine the business model. The Lean Startup approach of test,
iterate, and pivot.
– Inherent uncertainty, no step-by-step plan. comfortable with
uncertainty and more ambitious vision
2. Build phase: Courage and Patience
– We are accustomed to measuring progress linearly and
incrementally.
– Expectation GAP. Largest difference between increment and
exponential graph
3. Grow phase: Agility and Control
– Growth is happening faster than you can handle
– Domino vs pingpong management
1. Launch phase
• Vision
• Uncertainty
Exponential view....

You do not see the end, uncomfortable...

Exponential mindset

continuously looking
for ways to do more
and more with less
and less
Exponential mindset
RE-PERCEIVE
CHALLENGES AS
OPPORTUNITIES
Exponential mindset
LOVE THE PROBLEMS,
NOT THE SOLUTION
Are you the person carrying around
the hammer, looking for all the nails?
You need TOOLs and Technology.......

INNOVATION AND LEVERAGING

Exponential mindset
2. Build phase
• Courage
• Patience
Exponential mindset

EMBRACE
UNCERTAINTY
“create a culture where you
test it until it breaks. Learn
from it. And from those
learnings ameliorate to the
next model and take it that
much further.”
Exponential mindset

YOU DONT KNOW

WHAT YOU DONT KNOW
But the CROWD minght
know....
3. Grow phase
• Agility
• Control
Exponential mindset

INVITE OTHERS TO
JOIN-IN
Domino vs pingpong management
• Highly coordinated, vs Interaction amongst
participants
• Control of people vs control of principles
• Making decisions vs enpowering decisions
To summarize
require a shift from incremental to exponential.
At the start, it takes vision and a leap of faith
to commit to the unknown. In the middle, it
takes courage and patience to build the
foundation for growth even when results
aren’t yet apparent. When growth kicks in,
agility comes from empowering others and
letting go without losing control.
Rice exponentially growth
PROVE, We live in exponential times
• The cost of transportation, food and communication has became more than 100
times cheaper which is exponential decline
• The cost of computing, bandwidth and storage continues to decline
exponentially
• The cost of renewable sources of energy (e.g Solar) is declining exponentially
• Human Longevity has doubled the last 100 years
• Money and resource availability is growing exponentially (crowd sourcing,
crowd funding ,… )
• Education and literacy has grown exponentially, becomes everywhere available
and cheaper
• World Poverty is declining exponentially
• Today Small companies can do things that in the past only governments or big
multinationals could do ( e g Space X versus NASA , INSTAGRAM with 13
employees had a valuation of 1 billion)
• 1 individual with Smartphone has more power in his/her hands than any
president of any country 20 years ago
Story of 50 million GROWTH
from 75 years to 14 days

He’s right about the exponential growth of

technologies. It took the telephone 75
years to conquer 50 million people, and
computers just 14 years to command the
same number. But it only took Pokemon
Go just 14 days to dominate the
imaginations of 50 million consumers.
Smartphones have also followed an exponential
trajectory. It took the instrument but 16 years
to order the lives of one billion people. But it
took only four years for the addictive gadget
to infect, engineer and monitor the habits of
two billion humans.
Consider these powerful examples of
the exponential times we live in...
• Today a child in Africa with a smartphone has more
knowledge at their fingertips than the president of the
United States did 15 years ago.
• If Facebook were a country, it would be the 3rd largest
country in the world (behind China and India) and it was
only founded in 2004.
• A smartphone is several billion times more powerful and
100,000x smaller than a computer was in the early 1970s.
• It took more than 15 years to sequence HIV beginning in
the 1980s, 31 days to sequence SARS in 2003, and today a
virus can be mapped in a single day.
• The 2020s will be studded with one huge medical
breakthrough after another. (Predicted by Ray Kurzweil)
8 Rules for exponential organization
1. Think Big vision.
2. Plan with 10X mindset.
3. Comfortable with uncertainty, chaos and
change.
4. Be patient, Persistent, Unlearn and Relearn
5. Interaction / experimentation.
6. Embrace Failures.
7. Leverage as much as possible...
8. Coding, automating decision making tools.
8 Rules for exponential organization
1. Define a transformative company Purpose, think Big is vital in the 21st century as well
as a purpose that resonates with the society.
2. Plan a product or system/platform at least 10X better/bigger/faster/.... than the status
quo. A product/system easy to experience and/or frequently used.
3. Start by targeting a small initial market segment and establish from day one a process of
interaction/experimentation with the targeted early adopter customers and relevant on line
communities that are vital for innovation.
4. Failure is learning and an integral part of the process.
5. Leverage as much as possible 3rd party assets. There are so many third party companies to
help to implement fast prototypes, web assets, networking, marketing campaigns, reward
and equity crowd funding,..…..
6. Choose people that are comfortable with uncertainty, chaos and change.
7. As the business environment is accelerating create the conditions for faster decision making
through modern internal collaboration/social networking tools, automate through
algorithms and interfaces with the external world, use date based insights and allow for
much more autonomy especially at the organizational edges closer to the customer.
8. Be patient, Persistent, Unlearn and Relearn. In the linear era 20% input increase resulted in
20% output increase. In the exponential technologies era, 1X input can result in 10X or 20X
output.
