Late Penalties:

Assignments that are submitted after the due date and time will attract a penalty of 10%
of the total marks available per day late, up to a maximum of five days. Assignments
submitted after five days will be graded with zero mark.

Extensions:

Extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances on medical or


compassionate grounds. Extensions must be applied for in advance of the
assignment's due date and the lecturer of the appropriate course must sign the extension
certificate on the assignment cover sheet.

Assessment Irregularity:

Cheating and plagiarism, i.e. the action or practice of taking and using as one's own the
thoughts, writings or other work of someone else with the intent to deceive, constitute
irregularities as described in the programme handbook. Such actions are a major
infringement of the university college's academic values and will be dealt with severely.

Plagiarism and/or cheating occur when:

* a computer program or part of a program, substantially written by


someone else (either another student, a previous student, the author of a
publication or some other person) is presented as one's own work;

* paragraphs, and even sentences in essays which are written by someone


else, are not enclosed in quotation marks, and accompanied by full
reference to source;

* the work of someone else is paraphrased, and is not appropriately


attributed and referenced.

Please answer ALL the questions. This assignment must be hand written and all the

Question 1

(a) Rewrite each term of the expression

46.625 – 7.458 + CB.0116

into binary and perform the arithmetic.


Present the final answer in octal and hexadecimal.
(7 marks)

(b) Rewrite each term of the expression

100.062510 + 11.38 / 3.7510 x 6B.E16

into binary and perform the arithmetic.


Present the final answer in hexadecimal and decimal.
(12 marks)

(c) Convert 156.F16 (by showing all the working) into

(i) decimal,
(ii) binary, and
(iii) octal.
(6 marks)
Question 2

(a) By expressing the decimal quantities 534 and 1067 in BCD, add them together and
convert the BCD result to decimal.
(6 marks)

(b) Show how 345 and 87 can be added in 8-4-2-1 BCD, by showing all the working
clearly.
(5 marks)

(c) If numbers are held in 12-bit register in two’s complement, show how – 412 – 213
are evaluated. Justify your answer.
(9 marks)

(d) Find a 32-bit computer representation of 2154.421875, where 10 bits are used for the
characteristics, and the exponent bias is 29 – 1.
(5 marks)
