CHAPTER ONE

Michelle was feeling exhausted by the time they had left the party. Her boyfriend had come to pick her
up for a party at one of his friends' house. It had lasted all night until it was eleven. She was exhausted
by the time David had dropped her back at home. He had taken his time to drive slowly to her house.
When they both got to her house, he got out to help her out of the car. She walked to the door and
turned to see David right behind her. She was a little bit surprised because she thought he had gone
back into his car. He gently pushed her against the door so that her back was leaning against it. He came
closer to her and touched her face gently with his hand. He leaned forward and kissed her on the lips.
He looked at her and she stared back at him.

"You seem a little tensed. Are you okay?" he asked her.

She nodded. "Just a little tired. I'm sorry if I seem upset to you. I’m just a bit nervous, that’s all. You
know how I’m trying to recover from my previous breakup. The last one was an asshole. He was
cheating on me with some other girl so I broke up with him. I don’t want to get hurt again. Hope you’re
not offended,” she said, looking at him.

He shook his head. He took a step backwards and said, "No. I’m not. You know how much I care about
you. I’ll never do anything to hurt or upset you. I just want to get you to open up to me. But if you need
more time to get over the other guy, it’s okay. I’ll give you as much time as you want. Just know that
you’ve got me. Okay?"

“Okay,” she said.

“You don’t have to be afraid of me. I’ll never hurt you. I care so much about you I wouldn’t dare to harm
you.”

He took her hand and squeezed it gently. He asked her if she would like to go out and have dinner with
him the next evening. She nodded and smiled at him. He smiled back. She was looking very beautiful in
the dress she was wearing. He stared at her for a while and smiled at her again. She smiled back and told
him goodnight. He gave a kiss on the cheek and told her to sleep well. He walked back to his car and
waved at her. She waved back and he drove off. She entered the house and closed the door gently. The
party had been fun with David there. She thought of what he had said a few minutes ago. She began to
feel a little sad for not opening up to him. She had wanted to stop dating completely when she had been
cheated on by her previous boyfriend Jake. Jake had been her second boyfriend. The first one was a
drug addicted and she wasn’t aware until she caught him in the act. She climbed upstairs to her room.
She sat on her bed and took off her shoes. She went to the bathroom to freshen up and changed into
one of her nightgowns. While she was in bed, she kept thinking of David as she drifted off to sleep.

David had just got home and climbed into bed when his phone started ringing. He picked up his phone
and checked the screen for the caller. There was an unknown contact.

"Hello, who's this?" he asked. The voice that replied was a girl's. It was Lisa. He had met her at the club a
few weeks ago. She was a pretty girl and easygoing. "Oh, hi there. I didn't know it was you. Sorry about
that. I'm a little exhausted. Just got home from a party. I was just about to catch some sleep when you
called. How was your day? "

"I'm sorry. Didn't know you were in bed. I thought you might still be up.” she sounded a little upset.

"No need for apologizes. Is everything okay?" he asked a little worried.

"Oh no. Nothing really much has happened. Just couldn't sleep and thought of calling you" she replied
still sounding upset.

"Are you sure you are okay?" he asked her again.

He sat up on the bed and checked the alarm. It was a quarter to one o’clock. She told him to get some
sleep after assuring him that everything was fine. She said goodnight and hung up. He felt that
something was wrong and thought of calling her back but decided to wait until morning. He started
feeling sleepy and dozed off after a while.
