Assignment 3

The document discusses 5 statistical problems involving hypothesis testing using probability, statistics, and reliability theory. The problems involve testing if a die is honest, testing if male and female birth rates follow binomial distribution, testing if two diets have different effects on weight gain, testing if a new registration procedure affects time, and testing if two machines produce bullets with equal variability.

Probability, Statistics and Reliability Theory

Assignment: 3
1. A die is thrown 60 times with the following results.
Face 1 2 3 4 5 6
Frequency 8 7 12 8 14 11
Test at 5% level of significance if the die is honest, assuming that 𝑃 (𝜒 > 11.1) = 0.05
with 5 degree of freedom.
2. Given below is the number of male and female births in 1000 families having five
children:
Number of male Number of female Number of
births births families
0 5 40
1 4 300
2 3 250
3 2 200
4 1 30
Test whether the given data is consistent with the hypothesis that the binomial law holds
if the chance of a male birth is equal to that of a female birth.
3. From a random sample of 10 pigs fed on diet A, the increase in weight in a certain period
were 10, 6, 16, 17, 13, 12, 8, 14, 15, 9 lbs. for another random sample of 12 pigs fed on
diet B the increase in the same period were 7, 13, 22, 15, 12, 14, 18, 8, 21, 23, 10, 17 lbs.
test whether diets A and B differ significantly as regards their effect on increase in
weight.
4. The average length of time for students to register for summer classes at a certain collage
has been 50 minutes with a standard deviation of 10 minutes. A new registration
procedure using modern computing machines is being tried. If a random sample of 12
students had an average registration time of 42 minutes with s.d. of 11.9 minutes under
the new system, test the hypothesis that the population mean has not changed, using 0.05
as level of significance.
5. The diameters of two random samples, each of size 10, of bullets produced by two
machines have standard deviations 𝑠 = 0.01 and 𝑠 = 0.015. Assuming that the
diameters have independent distributions 𝑁(𝜇 , 𝜎 ) and 𝑁(𝜇 , 𝜎 ), test the hypothesis
that, the two machines are equally good.
