Principles of Interior Design

This document discusses several principles of interior design including balance, emphasis, rhythm, harmony, proportion, and scale. It provides examples and explanations of each principle. Balance is achieved through symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial arrangements. Emphasis is used to create focal points. Rhythm involves repetition. Harmony relates to color schemes and textures that work together cohesively. Proportion and scale involve the relationships between object sizes.

BALANCE
Balance is the distribution of visual weight in a room, and it is the key to harmonious interiors. Achieve equilibrium by
blending proportions, colors, and textures. There are three types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance.

• Symmetrical balance: is achieved by • Asymmetrical balance: is achieved • radial balance: is achieved when the

of a central axis. stability and balance. This can be
achieved when there is a central focal
point with other elements radiating
from or around it or through the use
of circular shapes or the placement of
objects in a circular arrangement.

EMPHASIS
Emphasis is a principle of interior design that
refers to creating a focal point or center of
attention in a space. It is used to draw the
eye to a particular area or object and create
visual interest and hierarchy in a room.
• One way to create emphasis is using
color. A bold accent wall or brightly
colored piece of furniture can draw the
eye and create a sense of energy and
excitement in a room.
• Another way to create emphasis is using
scale. A large piece of artwork or an
oversized light fixture can create a sense
of drama and importance in a space.
• Contrast can also be used to create
emphasis. A dark object against a light
background or a shiny surface against a
matte one can draw the eye and create
interest.

RHYTHM
• Rhythm refers to the repetition of visual
elements in a space. It creates a sense of
movement and flow, leading the eye from one
area to another. There are several ways to create
rhythm in interior design:
• Repeating patterns or shapes throughout the
space.
• Using a consistent color palette throughout the
space.
• Alternating light and dark elements to create a
sense of contrast and movement.

HARMONY
Harmony is an essential principle in interior
design. It refers to the way different elements of
a room work together to create a cohesive and
pleasing whole. Achieving harmony requires
careful consideration of color, texture, shape, and
proportion.
Color Harmony
One of the most important aspects of creating
harmony in a room is choosing the right colors.
A harmonious color scheme will use colors that
are adjacent to each other on the color wheel,
or colors that are complementary. This creates a
sense of balance and unity in the room.
Texture and Pattern Harmony
Texture and pattern can also be used to create
harmony in a room. Using similar textures or
patterns throughout the space can help tie
everything together and create a cohesive look.
However, it's important to avoid going
overboard with too many textures or patterns,
as this can create a cluttered and chaotic feel.

PROPORTION AND SCALE

Proportion
Proportion refers to the relationship
between objects in a space. It is
important to maintain a balance
between the size of objects in a
room to create a visually pleasing
and harmonious space.
7

PROPORTION AND SCALE

Scale
Scale refers to the size of objects in relation to
the space they occupy. It is important to
consider the scale of furniture and decor in a
room to ensure that they are proportionate
to the size of the room and other objects in it.
