Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

The will to make art is something that every artist thrives

to have when creating their desired works, and thus productivity
occurs. Especially with the visual artists, one will be inspired
by the people that they look up to such as famous artists that
sparks their motivation to create art, and their own surroundings.
One of the factors that affects an artist’s productivity by their
surroundings is the rise of the digital era, which includes Artificial
Intelligence or also known as AI.

According to Copeland (2023), Artificial intelligence (AI) is

the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to
perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. The
term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems
endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans,
such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or
learn from past experience. Some popular examples include
advanced search engines, recommendation systems for products
and services, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, self-driving
cars by companies like Waymo, generative tools such as
ChatGPT, as well as playing strategic games at a high level
like chess and go, and AI art.
Furthermore, AI art pertains to artwork that is created with
the help of artificial intelligence. The field of AI involves
developing machines that imitate or replicate human intelligence,
often utilizing algorithms that simulate the functions of the brain.
(Kerner, S.M., 2023)

As visual artists, the researchers observed that the use

of artificial intelligence in the art field does have a huge impact
on artists. By producing fresh ideas, automating tedious
processes, and offering cutting-edge insights, AI can increase
productivity. However, it's crucial to consider moral issues related
to authorship, uniqueness, and human creativity.

According to Hong and Curran (2019), the study found

that human-created artworks and AI-created artworks were not
judged to be equivalent in their artistic value. Additionally,
knowing that a piece of art was created by AI did not, in
general, influence participants’ evaluation of art pieces’ artistic
value.

Additionally, according to De Leon (2022), the topic of

AI-generated art in Manila, Philippines, calls into question the
authenticity and legitimacy of artists' work while also casting
doubt on their livelihood. Since when an artificial intelligence
program can create, within minutes, an aesthetically pleasing
digital painting based on a few simple text prompts, it will
certainly lead to questions about the “genuineness” or
“legitimacy” of a work of art, and about the fate of living,
breathing human beings whose livelihoods depend on artistic
skills.
Moreover, the influence of AI on artists in Cebu is
complex, involving issues with creative identity, morality, and
technology dependence as well as the potential for increased
productivity and creativity, depending on how the artists negotiate
it.

As a matter of fact, there are several reasons in mind

why the researchers chose this study. Knowing what AI art is
in this digital world is a crucial aspect in this study as it affects
an artist’s productivity and more importantly their livelihoods in
the near future. Conducting a study in this topic can also be
a helpful guide to digital artists as they navigate their way
towards the future of art.

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored on Charlie Gilkey’s Theory of

Productivity. According to Gilkey (2008), this theory emphasizes
the influence of meaningful work on a person’s productivity.
Gilkey argues that creative energy, focus, motivation, aptitude,
ideal time, difficulty, and distractions can be the forces that
affect productivity. This theory emphasizes the idea that these
forces create the hidden logic behind an artist’s productivity.
The theory of productivity projects the idea that a work that
they consider as meaningful can play a huge factor regarding
on an artist’s productivity to which can be the key to this
research.

This study is guided by Adam Smith’s Rational Choice

Theory. The theory suggests that an individual will perform a
cost-benefit analysis to determine whether an option is beneficial
for the people making a choice for themselves. (Browning, G.
Halcli and Webster, F., 2000).

Moreover, rational choice theory suggests that an artist's

choice to partake something that is flourishing and enticing for
them (AI art phenomenon) is the most logical way to take
advantage of the situation and thus end up benefiting them.
(Milgrom, P. and Levin, J., 2015)

This study is anchored by REPUBLIC ACT 9105. This

act is an act defining the crime of art forgery, providing
penalties, and institutionalizing the mechanism for art
authentication, appropriating funds therefore and for other
purposes. (Arroyo, G.M., 2001)

However, this republic act can’t guarantee an artist’s

protection towards AI art, but it can be potentially helping artists
against AI theft.

This study is supported by REPUBLIC ACT No. 4165.

This passage describes the creation of a National Commission
on Culture in the Philippines to oversee and support various
forms of Philippine arts and letters, such as music, drama,
painting, sculpture, literature, and dance. The Commission is
composed of a commissioner and fourteen members appointed
by the President of the Philippines, with representation from
different artistic fields and the public. The Commissioner serves
for six years, while members serve for six years as well, with
some serving a shorter initial term. There is a limitation on
reappointment, and the Commission is administratively
supervised by the President of the Philippines. (Katigbak, M.
K., 1964)

Specifically, this bill suggests that it can help artist’s

productivity by providing them a platform and reason to create
their art and thus help them with their livelihoods in the process.

One of the output suggestions is doing an art exhibition

on the school premises. Art exhibitions are a great way for the
public to connect with diverse forms of art. By featuring different
types of art from all over the world, museums and galleries
can introduce people to various artistic styles and ideas that
they may not have been exposed to previously. This helps in
promoting diversity and respect for different cultures among
society while providing an opportunity for individuals to gain
valuable insight into different perspectives. (Marshall,n.d.)

Considering the fact that art has the ability to inspire and
motivate people in various ways, displaying art that is beautiful,
thought-provoking or inspiring can encourage people to
appreciate and explore their own creativity in the field of art.

Furthermore, the idea of creating a workshop that tackles

AI art and how to utilize it efficiently is also one of the
suggested school activities. A workshop is a planned and
interactive session aimed at establishing a conducive
atmosphere for purposeful work and guiding a group through a
process that will result in positive outcomes. A workshop
typically involves hands-on activities, facilitation techniques,
group discussions, simulations, and collaborative exercises,
which allow participants to explore, ideate, and participate in
achieving their desired outcomes. Whether that’s aligning on a
perfect solution to a tricky problem or improving their skills
exponentially. (Smart, J., 2023)

Additionally, conducting a workshop about AI art creates

an opportunity for the people that have little to no knowledge
about AI art to learn more about it and thus benefit them
through their art endeavors.
