Assignment 2
Q1. A massless spring, suspended from a rigid support, carries a flat disc of mass 100g at its
lower end. It is observed that the system oscillates with a frequency of 10Hz and the amplitude
of the damped oscillations reduces to half its undamped value in one minute. Calculate (a) the
resistive force constants (b) the relaxation time of the system, (c its quality factor and (d) the
force constant of the spring.
Q2. A massless spring of spring constant 10Nm-1 is suspended from a rigid support and carries a
mass of 0.1 kg at its lower end. It is observed that the system performs damped oscillatory
motion and its energy decays to 1/e of its initial value in 50s. Find out the damping constant
and Q value of the oscillator. Also find out the change in the frequency due to damping.

Q3. Show that the fractional change in the frequency of the damped oscillations is 8𝑄2 wherte Q
is the Quality factor of that oscillator.
Q4. The energy of a piano string of frequency 256 Hz reduces to half its initial value in 2s. What
is the Q-value of the string?
Q5. The quality factor of a sonometer wire of frequency 500 Hz is 5000. In what time will its
energy reduce to 1/e of its value in the absence of damping?
Q8. In an LCR circuit L=0.5 H and C=5µF. What should be the maximum value of the resistance R
for the discharge to be oscillatory?
Q9. The Q value of an LCR circuit with L=0.2H and C=2µF is 100 and its frequency is 8000 Hz.
What is the value of R? How will the frequency of the discharge change if the resistance is
reduced to zero?
Q10. A linear harmonic oscillator of mass 10 kg is at rest at its equilibrium position in a viscous
medium that exerts a resistive force. The oscillator is given a kick at time t=0 and the amplitude

to 2mm. If the period of the damped oscillations is 1 s, find the value of the damping constant,
the relaxation time of the oscillator, its Q value, its logarithmic decrement, its frequency and
amplitude if damping were absent and the energy stored in the system initially.
Q11. A simple pendulum has a period of 1s and an amplitude of 10o. After 10 complete
oscillations, its amplitude is reduced to 5o. What is the relaxation time of the pendulum.
Calculate the Quality factor.
Q12. After how long a time will the charge oscillations decay to half amplitude if L=10mH, C=1
µF and R=0.1 ? Calculate the frequency of the damped oscillations.
Q13. Find the natural frequency of a circuit containing inductance of 50 mH and capacitance of
500pF. To which wavelength, its response will be maximum?
