HANDOUTS IN MODERN PHYSICS

 Force -push or pull that tends to accelerate.

 Net force -vector sum of resultant of all forces acting in an
object.
 Unbalanced force- force refers to a non-zero net force.

 Balanced force- zero net force when forces of equal

magnitude act in opposite directions.
 Contact force- forces that arise because of physical
contact between objects.
 Action-at-a distance- forces have an inverse square
relationship for the separation of distance between
interacting particles and infinite range.
 Inertia- natural tendency of an object to maintain a state
of rest or to remain in uniform motion in straight line.
 Weight- gravitational force with which the earth attracts
the body

 Mass- Quantity of matter in a given body

 laws of motion
Inertia, acceleration, interaction
 friction- resistance, which opposes every effort.
 Example of friction forces
Kinetic friction, static friction, rolling friction

 Static friction- Frictional force exerted by one surface on

another where there is no relative motion of the two
surfaces.
 Rolling friction- Frictional force that opposes one body
rolling over another owing to the constant deformation of
the surfaces in contact.

 Fluid friction- viscosity of liquids and gases to offer

resistance to objects moving through them.
 factors that affects friction
Velocity, normal force, area of contact
 Lubrication- way of reducing friction.
 Nature of rubbing surfaces. Friction is less when the
surfaces are hard and smooth.
 System of units- complete set of units, both fundamental
and derived, for all kinds of quantities.
 Derived units- dimensions that are expressed as a
combination of the fundamental units.
 Unit- value of quantity in terms of which other values or
quantities are expressed.
 Standard- the embodiment of physical unit
 Candela- unit of luminous intensity.
 Fundamental units- expresses the value of measurement
based on fundamental quantities.
 Fundamental quantities
Gravity, speed in a given direction, velocity
 Gravity- Physical force that is responsible for interactions,
which occur because of mass between particles and
aggregations of matter
 Freely falling- body that is moving freely under the
influence of gravity.
 Projectile motion- motion of objects that are thrown into
the air at an angle.
 Equilibrium- a condition in which two or more forces
acting on an object produces no acceleration because
they are balanced.

 Statics- study of forces acting on an object that is in

balanced and at rest.
 Center of gravity- the point of an object to which all
gravitational torques cancel.
 Rigid body- an object extended in space, which does not
change its size or shape when subjected to force.
 Center of mass- point at which all masses of an object
are concentrated.
 Stable equilibrium- If an object rests on a knife-edge or
similar surface so that a slight displacement raises the
center of gravity.
 Unstable equilibrium- If the center of gravity is lowered
by a small displacement or rotation.
 Power- the time rate of doing work.
 Energy- refers to the capacity human to do work.
 Kinetic- energy possessed by an object because of its
motion.
 Potential- energy of an object by virtue of its position and
configuration.
 Circular motion- pertains to the body along a circular
path.
 Radian- an angle subtended at the center of a circle by an
arc of length equal to the radius.
 Centrifugal force- refers to the equal opposite reaction
exerted by the revolving object against the central force.
 Centripetal force- unbalanced force directed toward the
center of the circular path that gives the object the central
acceleration
 Law of universal gravitation- stated that every mass in
the universe attracts every other mass by a force that is
directly proportional to the product of the two masses and

 Frequency- number of cycles or revolution per second?
 Period- refers to the time for complete revolution.
 Modern physics- branch of physics that deals with the
post-Newtonian concepts in the world of physics.
