Geometric Sequences

Learning Target: Understand the concept

of geometric sequences:
- Identify the sequence
- The sequence formula and how to use it
Do Now:
1. Write a function where n is the figure number and f(n) is the
number of squares.
2. Write this function as a sequence.
3. Evaluate the 12th term.
In pairs at your table discuss:
- What is a sequence?
- What is an arithmetic sequence?
- How can we tell if a sequence is arithmetic or
something else?

I will be asking someone at random in 2 minutes for an

answer. Be ready!
A reminder:
I will pose a problem for you and a partner in a moment.
Make a copy of this table in your notebook
Individual work: skill check!
Determine whether the sequence is arithmetic, geometric, or neither.
Explain your reasoning!

Write the next 3 terms in each sequence.

Individual work: skill check!

Extension if you think you can handle it!

Big Ideas Math

Expectations:
- Individual work.
- Any speech should be quiet and non-disruptive to your
neighbours at your table.
- English only! The more you practice it, the easier it will be!
Do Now:
1. 2.
I have 2 accounts, an interest The population of frogs in a lake
account with an initial deposit of can be represented by the function:
$2000 that gives 5% interest
compounded monthly; and a f(t) = 10 (2.5)t
savings account with $2000 in it.

years.
In pairs at your table discuss:
- What is the domain of a sequence?
- How might a geometric sequence and an exponential
function differ even if they describe the same curve?

I will be asking someone at random in 2 minutes for an

answer. Be ready!

Hint: there are harder but shorter ways, and longer but
easier ways to solve this.

Once you have found the answer, check your method and
answer with other people at your table.

If finished, then:
- Check for overdue work
- Begin your review of Unit 6 - Exponentials
Do Now:
Exponentials Unit Topics:
- (6.1) Properties of Exponentials
- (6.2) Radicals and rational exponents
- (6.3) Exponential functions
- (6.4) Growth and decay functions
- (6.4) Interest calculations
- (6.6) Geometric sequences

Write down and rank these topics with 1 being the topic you most
struggle with down to 6 with the topic you feel most comfortable with.
Review Day:
You now have the start of a plan for where you should begin
your review in this lesson. Options include:
1. Create a “cheat sheet”, 1 A4 sheet of paper with
everything that you need to know on it.
2. Use the Big Ideas textbook Practice sections.
3. Use the Desmos sheet with a partner (functions).
4. Catch up with Big Ideas assignments.
5. Khan academy -> Algebra 1 -> Units 9, 11 and/or 12
Desmos sheet
There are 3 exercises that you could use with a
partner on this Desmos sheet:
1. Finding an equation from a table of points.
2. Identifying an equation from a curve and 2 points
3. A more indepth version of Ex1 with a non-unit
input increase.
