According to Saqueton and Uychoco (2016), paraphrasing is rendering the essential ideas of
a text (sentence/ paragraph) using your own words. For example, when you hear a certain story from
another person, and you want to tell the same story to one of your friends. You will not use the exact
words, instead, you will narrate it based on your own understanding and you use your own words.
1. It is usually shorter and simpler than the original text (although, it can be longer because it
will be based on your understanding)
2. It is more detailed than a summary.
3. It is understanding the text first before writing your paraphrased version.
Steps in Paraphrasing
1. Read the original text carefully. You cannot write a good paraphrase version without
understanding the text first.
2. Remove the text in front of you. If you can see the text, there is a tendency for you to copy
words from the original text.
3. Explain the essential ideas of the original text using your own words.
4. Start writing your own version. Edit and revise if necessary.
5. Return to the original text to see if you accidentally copied some words from it and check if
all the details are accurate.
Activity 1. Paraphrase the following sentences, write your answers on the space provided.
1. Education plays a crucial role in shaping our lives and paving the way for success. It equips us
with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to navigate through the complexities of the
world. As an 11th-grade student, I understand the importance of education and how it can
open doors to endless opportunities.

2. One of the negative effects of inflation is the decrease in purchasing power. When prices rise,
the value of money decreases, and people can buy fewer goods and services with the same
amount of money. This can lead to a decrease in the standard of living for individuals and
families, as they struggle to afford basic necessities.

3. Poverty is a pressing issue that affects millions of people around the world. It is a condition in
which individuals or families lack the resources necessary to meet their basic needs and enjoy
a decent standard of living. The effects of poverty are far-reaching and can have a profound
impact on both individuals and society as a whole.
