POWER ON AND LOGIN TO YOUR WINDOWS SERVER VIRTUAL MACHINE.

Exercise 1. Configuring Internet Explorer Enhanced Security

Configuration
By default, enhanced security configuration is enabled on Internet Explorer (IE) in the
Windows server. This is meant to keep the server secure while using the browser, since
Internet browsing from a server is discouraged. In this exercise we turn off the IE
Enhanced Security to make it easier to test our DNS Settings later. Note that this is not
recommended on servers in a production environment.
1. On the Server Manager, click on Local Server in the left pane.
2. Click on IE Enhanced Security Configuration. Select the Off radio buttons and click OK.
Refresh the Server Manager.
Take screen shot #1 of local server properties showing that IE Security
Configuration is Off.

Exercise 2. Configuring a DNS Server

The DNS role was already installed when we configured the server to be a primary domain
controller. Now we will configure a forward lookup zone that will translate our URL to the
correct IP address thereby allowing our web server to work in the next lab.
1. Open the DNS manager from the Server Manager: Tools→DNS

2. In the DNS Manager, expand the server node WINDOWS-FS1234 if it is not already
expanded. Right-click on Forward Lookup Zones and click on New Zone. The New Zone
Wizard will launch.

3. Welcome to the New Zone Wizard: Click Next.

4. Zone Type: Select the default Primary Zone and check the Store the zone in Active
Directory. Click Next.

5. Active Directory Zone Replication Scope: Select To all DNS servers running on
domain controllers in this domain and click Next.

6. Zone Name: In the Zone name text box, enter cnet222.com

7. Dynamic Update: Select Allow only secure dynamic updates and click Next.

8. Completing the New Zone Wizard: Review the information and click Finish to create
the zone. It should appear under the Forward Lookup Zones when expanded.
Take screen shot #2 showing the new zone.
9. To create the corresponding reverse lookup zone, follow similar steps: Right-click
Reverse Lookup Zones and click on New Zone.
10. Welcome to the New Zone Wizard: Click Next.
11. Zone Type: Select the default Primary Zone and check the Store the zone in Active
Directory. Click Next.
12. Active Directory Zone Replication Scope: Select To all DNS servers running on
domain controllers in this domain and click Next.
13. Reverse Lookup Zone Name: Select IPv4 Reverse Lookup Zone and click Next.

14. Reverse Lookup Zone Name: For the Network ID, enter 172.16 and click Next.

15. Dynamic Update: Select Allow only secure dynamic updates and click Next.
16. Completing the New Zone Wizard: Review the information and click Finish to create
the zone. It should appear under the Reverse Lookup Zones when expanded.
Take screen shot #3 showing the new zone.
17. Now we will add a new host name (Type A) DNS entry to the Forward Lookup Zone.
Expand the Forward Lookup Zones. Click on the new cnet222.com zone and then right-
click either on the zone name or in the white space in right pane. Click on New Host (A
or AAAA).

18. In the ‘New Host’ window leave the Name textbox blank and for IP address enter the IP
address 172.16.0.10. Select the check-box for Create associated pointer (PTR) record.
Click Add Host. Click OK on the pop-up. Then click Done.

19. Right-click again on the cnet222.com zone and add a New Alias (CNAME). This time
enter the following:
a. Name: www
b. Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for target host: cnet222.com
Click OK.

20. The right pane will show the two new hosts just added.
Take screen shot #4 showing the new DNS entries.

The DNS server is now configured to resolve the host name www.cnet222.com to the IP
address of the machine hosting this site. However, we have not yet created any web page.
We will do this in a future lab.
