d = Bearing bore diameter
dmp = The arithmetical mean of the largest and smallest single diameter of the bore in a single
radial plane of one ring
ds = Single diameter of a bore
D = Bearing outside diameter
Dmp= The arithmetical mean of the largest and smallest single diameter of the outside surface
in a single radial plane of one ring
Ds = Single diameter of an outside surface
Ke = Radial runout of an outer ring raceway
Ki = Radial runout of an inner ring raceway
L = Loose fit (Clearance)

4. Bearing clearance
4.1 Radial internal bearing clearance is the total distance one bearing ring can move in
relation to the other, under no load, in a radial direction. Tables 1 through 3 show the tolerance
limits as adopted by ANSI/AFBMA for radial internal clearance of single-row, radial contact ball
bearings; cylindrical roller bearings; and self-aligning roller bearings.
4.2 All rolling element bearings are fabricated with some radial clearance, which is greater than
the bearing should have in service. When the inner ring of a bearing is mounted with a press fit,
the inner ring expands elastically so that the internal clearance is reduced. Similarly, when the
outer ring of a bearing is mounted with a press fit, the outer ring compresses and the internal
clearance is reduced. The internal clearance can be reduced by 50 to 80 percent.
4.3 The internal clearance also may be reduced by thermal expansion. Generally, the housing
will carry heat away from the outer ring so it expands less than the inner ring.
4.4 The clearance in bearings should be close to zero when the bearing has been mounted and
has reached its equilibrium temperature.
4.5 Unless otherwise specified, bearings are supplied with normal clearance. This is done so
under ordinary operating conditions, the clearance will be suitable when one of the two bearing
rings is mounted with the recommended press fit. A smaller bearing clearance must be used if
the radial or axial displacement is to be held to a minimum. A greater bearing clearance must be
used when severe operating conditions require an extra-tight press fit for the inner ring, both rings
must be mounted with a press fit, or when the operating temperature is higher than normal.
Clearances greater than normal are more commonly specified for high speeds than for any other
reason.
4.6 Internal radial clearance in a ball bearing is measured with a precise dial indicator reading in
tenths of a thousanths of an inch. Feeler gages are used only on spherical roller bearings
(see PH7).
4.7 Internal clearance of single-row angular contact and tapered roller bearings is set through
axial adjustment of the rings
5. Tolerance class
5.1 Bearing tolerances refer to the accuracy in which the bearings are manufactured. Each
part in a bearing has minute irregularities in size and shape causing some slight out-of-roundness
and taper which results in radial runout for the bearing. Tables 4 through 7 show the
ANSI/AFBMA bore, runout, and width tolerance for each ABEC/RBEC* Class. Table 4 is for
normal tolerance bearings (Class 1). Tables 5, 6, and 7 are for progressively tighter tolerances.
5.2 If out-of-roundness and taper exist in a particular bearing, minimum and maximum diameter
readings of the bore and outside diameter are obtained. The bore diameter dmp, and outside
diameter Dmp are the arithmetical mean of the minimum and maximum readings.
5.3 The radial runout of the inner ring, Ki, is measured with the bearing lightly pressed on an
arbor and is the difference between the maximum and the minimum dial indicator readings on the
outside diameter of the bearing while rotating the inner ring one revolution. The radial runout of
the outer ring, Ke, is obtained while rotating the outer ring one revolution.

7. Shoulder dimensions
7.1 The minimum shaft shoulder diameters which will properly locate the bearings on the shafts
and the maximum housing shoulder diameter which will properly locate the bearings in the
housings are shown in Table 12. These dimensions are for plain radial loads or light thrust loads.
Other types of loads and bearings may require higher shoulders resulting in larger shaft shoulder
diameters or smaller housing shoulder diameters to carry their thrust load. Maximum shaft
shoulder heights are dependent upon individual manufacturer’s design of bearings used in the
application.
7.2 The fillet radius in the housing or on the shaft must be smaller than the bearing radii to allow
the bearing to seat properly against the shoulders. See DM3B for stress concentration factors.

(2) The term “Interchangeable” refers to such assembly of rings and rollers that the separable ring can be replaced by any
other ring of the same design and manufacturer.
(3) The term “Matched” refers to such assembly of rings and rollers that the separable ring cannot be replaced by any other
ring.

(1) Does not apply to self–aligning ball bearings
(2) These limits apply before seals or shields are inserted
(3) Applies to bearings of metric width series 1 or narrower.
(4) This refers to a ball bearing on which one or both sides are so modified that two or more bearings can be mounted side by
side as a unit.

selected which give a slightly tighter fit than those in the table.
3. The notes regarding axial displaceability of the outer ring serve as a guide for judgment of the suitability of the fit, when
“closed” bearings are used as floating bearings.
