ELE 635 COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Winter 2003
This course is a comprehensive introduction to basic principles of communication theory with emphasis on analog
modulation systems. Lecture topics include: Fourier methods of signal and system representation, signal transmission
through linear systems, amplitude modulation, angle modulation, frequency division multiplexing, super-heterodyning, and
effects of noise in analog communication systems.

NOTES:
• Mid-term Examination: It is scheduled for the week of February 17, 2003 during the 2-hour lecture period.
• Assignments: There will be regular assignments from each chapter of the textbook. Information about these
assignments will be posted on the course homepage.
• Formal Report: This is a team project. You and your team have to select a topic related to communication
systems as discussed in this course; research the topic; write and submit a formal report on this topic. Please
see the Course Schedule table on page 3 for deadlines regarding the preparation of the formal report. Further
information about the formal report will be provided in the class. Reports will be assessed not only on their
technical or academic merit, but also on the communication skills of the authors as exhibited through
these reports. In addition to a seminar on technical report writing seminar to be given during the Study Week,
you can find technical report writing guidelines from the course homepage.
