INTRODUCTION

In the process of constructing the questions to assess reading and writing skills, careful
consideration has been taken into account to ensure their validity and reliability. This test paper
is for form 3 students with B1 low CEFR level and the theme is people and culture. There are
four sections in the paper in which students have to respon accordingly to all questions. The first
two sections; section A and section B are holistic reading tests. The texts used to assess reading
skills have been carefully selected to ensure they are aligned with students’ CEFR levels.
Furthermore, section A focuses on multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and the reading skill
employed is identifying specific details. In this particular section, teachers will be able to assess
whether students are able to identify the specific details in the passage and respond to the
questions accurately. While section B mainly comprises open-ended questions and the specific
reading skill utilised is information transfer. Students need to elicit longer responses using the
information in the passage.

Moving on, another two sections; section C and section D test on writing. In section C,
students will be required to respond to an email by writing another email in not more than 80
words. According to the writing rubrics, the criteria that will be assessed are content,
communicative achievement, organisation, and language. Whereas for section D, the specific
writing genre that students have to write is opinion-based essay. Some prompts are also given to
them as stimuli to assist students in writing the essay. Students will be evaluated based on
content, communicative achievement, organisation, and language as well. These two questions
will help teachers assess students’ writing ability. All in all, this test paper serves as an effective
assessment tool to test on reading and writing skills.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important traditional
festivals in China. It marks the beginning of the lunar new year and is a time for families to
come together and celebrate.

The festival is characterized by vibrant decorations, lively parades, and delicious feasts. Red is
the predominant color, symbolizing good luck and happiness. People hang red lanterns,
couplets, and paper cutouts on doors and windows to ward off evil spirits and welcome good
fortune.

Families gather for a reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year, enjoying traditional
dishes such as dumplings and fish that symbolize prosperity and abundance. Fireworks and
firecrackers are set off to drive away negative energy and usher in the new year with joy and
positivity.

During the festival, children receive red envelopes containing money as a token of good luck
and blessings from elders. Lion and dragon dances are performed in the streets, accompanied
by the rhythmic beats of drums and cymbals, bringing excitement and energy to the
celebrations.

Chinese New Year is a time of renewal, reflection, and hope for the future. It is a festive

15th March 2023

Dear diary,

I'm really excited! This week, my friend Varinder is helping me make a video for my school.
It's about Holi, a special Hindu festival we celebrate every year, usually in March. We're going
to film some of the activities and next week we're going to show the class our video. I hope
they like it!

11 a.m.
Last night we went to the big bonfire! Today, the big Holi celebrations start. We went to the
park this morning, where people were playing the drums and other musical instruments.
People were dancing and singing everywhere - in the streets, outside temples and other
buildings too. Everyone looked so happy! During Holi, we celebrate the good things in life.

5 p.m.
Colours are important at Holi because it's the 'festival of colours'. That's why we put coloured
powder into water and then throw the coloured water at each other. Some colours have
meanings; for example, red means love, while green means a new start. We went to see my
aunt, uncle and cousins after lunch. It was great fun. We used water pistols and we filled
balloons with water and powder. Then we spent hours outside and threw the coloured water at
each other. My aunt doesn't let us throw water inside the house, so we put coloured powder on
each other's faces instead.

7 p.m.
It's evening now. We're clean and in our best clothes. Now it's time to enjoy special Holi food
and drinks. Our grandmother's prepared gujiya, a sweet made with dried fruit and nuts. She's
also made my favourite drink: a kind of yoghurt drink called lassi. Later tonight we're going to
dress up and visit the rest of the family. I love Holi! It's my favourite festival in the world!

My favourite way to travel

I enjoy travelling by train. I always take the train from KL Central when I travel outstation to
visit my cousins.
First, the seats are wide and comfortable. There is more space between each row so I can sit
comfortably. Second, I can walk along the train carriage if I need to stretch my legs. Third, a
train has large windows. If I’m not reading or sleeping, I will look out the window to look at
the scenery. Fourth, there is a cafe. I can buy food if I am hungry. Finally, there is a power
socket near my seat. I can charge my mobile phone or laptop. I like travelling this way because
a train provides facilities that make travelling comfortable and enjoyable.
