Osmosis Ib-Style Questions2

The document contains questions about osmosis and water potential. It includes questions about a plant cell in salt solution and its water and pressure potentials. It also includes questions about an experiment with pieces of carrot, broccoli, and celery placed in distilled water and salt solution, asking about expected changes, differences in rates of osmosis, water potentials, and water gain or loss.

Osmosis and water potential IB-style questions

2 In an experiment a piece of carrot, broccoli and celary were put into two beakers
as shown in the photo

a. Outline the changes which would be expected to occur to the pressure potential of
cells of the vegetables in the distilled water during the first 10 minutes (2)

…………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………………………….

b. The Broccoli cells are known to have a lower water potential (-50 kPa) than the carrot
cells (-30 kPa). They both have the same pressure potential of 400kPa.
Describe how this difference would affect the rate of osmosis in each cell in the
distilled water. (2)

…………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………………………….

c. The Salt solution has a water potential of -800 kPa.

The celery tissue also has a pressure potential of 300 kPa, and a solute potential of -
320 kPa.
Calculate the water potential of the celery cells (1)

d. Deduce whether the celery cells would gain or lose water when covered by the sodium
chloride solution, in the first 10 minutes of the experiment. (1)
