COURSE: REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS

SUBJ. CODE: FME19

Instructor: Engr. G Sainz Belonio
======================================================================

EXAMPLES – REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS:

EXAMPLE 1:
An ice plant produces 20 tons of ice per day at – 15oC from water at 25oC. If the miscellaneous
losses are 12% of the freezing and chilling loads, calculate the refrigeration capacity of the
plant in tons of refrigeration.

Solution:
Given: m = mass of ice = mass of water = 20 tons/day = 0.231 kg/sec
ti (ice) = -15oC
tw (water) = 25oC
heat loss, QLOSS = 12% (QREF)

Principle of ice making:

water water ice ice

liquid liquid solid solid

(tw) (tf = 0OC = 32OF) (ti)
Qsw Qfi Qsi

Required: Refrigeration capacity, QREF

Computations: Q REF =Q sw + Q fi + Qsi +Q Loss

where:
o
(a) Q sw =m w c pw (t w −0 ) = (0.231 kg/sec) (4.187 KJ/kg-C) (25 – 0) oC
= 24.18 KJ/sec

(b) Q fi =m i L fi = (0.231 kg/sec) (335 KJ/kg) = 77.385 KJ/sec

(c) Q si =m i c pi (0−t i) = (0.231 kg/sec) (0.5 x 4.187 KJ/kg-C) (0 + 15) oC

= 7.25 KJ/sec

(d) QLOSS = 12% (QREF)

Finally, Q REF =24.18+77.385+7.25+0.12 Q REF

1TOR
Q REF = 123.65 KW x = 35.13 TOR (tons of
3.52 KW
refrigeration)

EXAMPLE 2:
Compute the total heat to be removed from 110 kg of lean beef if it were to be cooled from
20oC to 4oC, after which it is to be frozen and cooled to -18oC. Specific heat above freezing is
3.23
KJ/kg-C and below freezing is 1.68 KJ/kg-C. Freezing point is -2.2oC and latent heat of fusion is
233 KJ/kg.

Solution:
Given: m = 110 kg Ca = 3.23 KJ/kg-C Cb = 1.68 KJ/kg-C
Lf = 233 KJ/kg

Entering → Freezing → Storage

t e = 20oC t f = -2.2oC t s = -18oC

Required: Total heat to be removed from beef, Q T

Computations: Q T =Q sa + Q f +Q sb+Q Loss

where: Q sa =m c a (t e −t f )
= (110 kg)(3.23 KJ/kg-C) (20 + 2.2) oC = 7887.66 KJ
Q f =m L f
= (110 kg) (233 KJ/kg) = 25,630 KJ
Q sb =mc b (t f −t s)
= (110 kg) (1.68 KJ/kg-C) (-2.2 + 18)oC = 2919.84 KJ

Finally, QT = 7887.66 + 25,630 + 2919.84 = 36,437.5 KJ

=================================================================
EXAMPLE 3:
The power required to drive the compressor in a Carnot Refrigeration is 50 HP. It operates
between -5oC and 40oC, respectively. Determine the tons of refrigeration required.

Solutions:
Given: Carnot Refrigeration
Wnet = 50 HP = 37.3 KW
TL = -5 + 273 = 268 K TH = 40 + 273 = 313 K

Required: Tons of Refrigeration, QA

Computations: solving for QA

QA
COP= , QA = COP x Wnet
W net
TL 268
Also, COP= = = 5.96
( T H −T L) ❑ (313 −268 )

1TOR
Finally, QA = (5.96) (37.3 KW) = 222.14 KW x = 63.11 TOR (tons of
3.52 KW
ref.)

======================================================================
EXAMPLE 4:
A refrigeration system operates on the Reversed Carnot cycle. The maximum and minimum
temperatures are 25oC and 72oC, respectively. If the power input required is 28.12 KW, find the
heat rejected from the condenser.

Solutions:
Given: Carnot Refrigeration (Reversed Carnot Cycle)
Wnet = 28.12 KW
TL = 25 + 273 = 298 K TH = 72 + 273 = 345 K

Required: Heat rejected, QR

Wnet = QR - QA then, QR = Wnet + QA
QA
COP= then, QA = COP x Wnet
W net
TL 298
where : COP = = = 6.34
( T H −T L )❑ (345 −298 )❑
QA = (6.34) (28.12 KW) = 178.28 KW

Finally, QR = 28.12 + 178.28 = 206.40 KW
