UNIT 2: ADVANTAGES OF USING ICT IN ENGLISH LEARNING

Symbaloo application for ICT Tools.

2.1 HOW TO STUDY THIS UNIT

“ICT in ENGLISH” (READ THE ARTICLE)

Nowadays we are using computer-based technologies of ICT: but these have been changed
and now are recent and have an enormous effect. It is amazing how big an effect it has on
our lifes. So we can say that we have changed from an industrial society to an information
society. Because information is everywhere.

So, one thing that we have to take into consideration is ICT in schools—-> teachers and
students profit from it. Students are not the only ones who profit from it, also the teachers.

ICT IN ENGLISH: POTENTIAL GAINS FOR STUDENTS

When using ICT in schools, they are so important because they motivate them, they are
interactive and it is a big stimulus, they send feedback at the moment in some cases, they
always use it at home and they are so interested in technologies. As they use technologies
at home, the use of them in class is quite different. We as teachers can not control what they
do with technologies but we can show them how they should use them.

- We have to take into account skills for lifelong learning. People will meet to be
ICT literatures. Someone who is literature is someone who knows reading and
writing, so ICT literature is someone who knows how technology works.

So, people will need to use ICT literature in order to perform the most basic tasks in their
daily lifes and at work. Our students will be adults and this situation will be worse because
everything will be more difficult in terms of using ICT if they do not know how to use them.
So it is important how to deal with technologies in order to succeed in these types of tasks.
Not only in daily life but also in work life.

- International awareness: using ICT is a way to be informed of everything that

happens in the world. But also about the impact that ICT itself has all over the world
as well. In this one, students are not only spectators, they can also take an active
part in it by sometimes publishing contents that other students or other people can
comment on and give advice. They can work together or simply comment on other
people's posts in another part of the world.

- Access to information: Nowadays people can access information from everywhere.

However, there is a drawback. Since through the internet students can access
everything or many sources, students also have to be a little bit critical at the side,
they have to filter all those contents.Which of them are reliable and which are not.

- Motivation: Using ict tools for studying instead of using the traditional paper is
motivating for them because it is more attractive for them. Students often lose their
concentration because they are not interested in what they are working on and ict
tools help them focus and concentrate.Sometimes what they are
doing/reading/playing it helps to feel more interested in the content in which they are
working on.

- Communication: Information can be sensed to multiple addresses just with the clock
of a button. So information nowadays can travel very fast and it can be used in
seconds and at a minimal cost. So it is not like some years ago. Once you have your
computer, your phone or your device, sending an email is free. One of the best things
is that it can be adapted to that person’s needs.

In terms of the school outcome, collaborative work could be carried out among classmates
that are in class but also they can work collaboratively with people from other schools.

- Presentation of work: there are many programs where you can present works
(word, power point, canva, genially…) With these apps students have the chance of
making that presentation visually appealing but also they have to be able to use and
learn how to use them and also they learn to summarize information, to order it,...
This is something that is important for them. But it is also something they are going to
benefit from in the future, in the world of work.

- Improved learning and performance: The learners that use ict tools usually obtain
good results, not all of them but apparently most of them do. Because of they
improved their concentration and they feel more motivated and when they are
motivated they want to learn.

The thing is that there are many advantages regarding this since using ICT tools is
such a stimulus. We have to take advantage of that and use it for their own good.
Sometimes it is difficult to find a game that they really like because they sometimes simply
want to watch youtube.

POTENTIAL GAINS FOR TEACHERS:

- ICT Skills: It is beneficial and essential if you are looking for a job in a private
school. But also in the public service are courses that if you do it can give you
points.

Promotion, in Spain you do not have access for example to be the director or the
headstudies of a school because of your ICT skills. But if you decide to go to the UK
for example to be a teacher, having ICT skills definitely is going to help you.

- Subject-specific information: There are multiple web pages and social media
accounts that are designed resources for english teachers. There are people creating
contents for other teachers to explore, to use, to download, to put in practice in class,
to print,... Sometimes these materials are available for us and sometimes we have to
pay for them. But there is a lot of subject-specific information.
- Online content providers: Sometimes there are onlines subscription services that
are also available and they have to be bought. Sometimes you have additional
content that you would not get if you were using the free version.

- Access to professional advice and support: In many web pages there is an

automatic link which you can use in order to receive help or support. In addition,
there are forums where teachers can talk about a topic in particular and they can
debate or comment on what other people are saying or ideas. You can also add new
ideas.

- Administrative support: Is a way of having everything in one device. And actually,

a computer comes very handy. When we are trying to store content because
everything is accessible we do not have to be carrying a bag full of books or
worksheets. It is a very good way to keep a lot of information in one place and have
it always there prepared for wherever we need it.

2.2. IMPORTANCE OF ICT IN THE ESL CLASSROOM

English is a language that is used in technology. Technology is an integral part of English

as a second language material. When we are in class there are many things that we have
been doing for years such as listening or nowadays visiting all these websites or these apps
for playing or for learning.

It has always been there and nowadays, technology is extremely mobile. Technologies
now are not only for classroom orientity. We can use technology from the class or from
home, so that is why we have to incorporate technology in our teaching. We have to take
into account that our students are digital natives, they are grown with technologies as a
natural part of their lifes. For them it is easy to incorporate them into their learning process.
Especially if they are learning a language. So, there are multiple advantages if we do it.
They can give at the moment the feedback for example. And it is also a more dynamic and
funny way to do things.
We know that the Internet is a communication tool and it makes collaborative work more
interesting and amusing, even the school you are from. So the Internet gives the possibility
of creating our own materials and using authentic materials that other people have
created.

But there is a negative side about ICT. What are the drawbacks/conveniences of
INTERNET?

Sometimes wifi does not work. Can happen multiple technical issues that wouldn’t happen
otherwise.

2.3 DIFFICULTIES: AN OBSTACLE RACE?

- Digital divide: This is one of the most difficult. Not all the teachers or schools have
computers or interrupters in the classroom. Nowadays it is rare not to have a
computer or something like that in Spain, but it could happen. Sometimes they do not
have one or the internet is not working. You have the ideas but you do not have the
means to perform them. So you have to adapt most of these things to the traditional
method that is not as attractive as the other or funny either.

- Generation divide: some parents and some teachers are digital immigrants. So it is
not natural for them as for students. So they are late for the world of technology. The
reason for this is that we have incorporated technologies late to teaching practice.

There are many courses available to improve in the learning of the use of technologies. But
it requires to be consequently learning but some people did not have the time or did not find
the motivation to do this. This is something that we should be very mind, we have to develop
with society and its development.
WE MUST TAKE THESE DIFFICULTIES INTO ACCOUNT WHEN DESIGNING OUR
CLASS PROGRAM AND FIND ALTERNATIVES.

Bringing an ICT tool to analogue outcome. If there are difficulties we have to find
alternatives.

2.4. ADVANTAGES

ICT STIMULATES CREATIVITY AND INTERACTION

ICT stimulates creativity and interaction through many ways. Some of the most important
advantages are, for example, Interactivity because there are a lot of applications that allow
students to practice English in this case. They are available via software but they can simply
go on online or on the internet and do it there through the internet. Once they finish school,
they can simply arrive home and keep practicing and playing .

Audio-visual effect: So in this case it is learning through images and sounds. This way it
makes it easier if they want to learn, for example, vocabulary. They will reproduce the audio
file reading the word out loud. This way children can link a sound with the visual, it is a better
way to retain information.

We can also have a cross-curricular tool: in this way children learn English but they also
are learning another subject at the same time. So they can apply their knowledge both to
English and non-english. In this case the learning process becomes a hole with integration of
different topics from different fills.

There are also collaborative tasks, so this is an advantage for both teachers and students.
Because there are some group tasks that are advantageous for both. For example web-
quest. It is like creating a web page in which an activity has to be developed and the teacher
has to include the different steps, for example: word forming what you need to do, the
assessment how it is wanna be, the dates…

Lifelong learning applies not only to our daily lifes but also to our professional lifes in the
future. In a way that they are engaged in the society we are living for.

Creativity and Innovation we have to be mindful that teachers are an essential part of the
use of technology because new methodologies are developed through the use of ICTs. So
the learning process stops in the teacher’s hands who is going to guide the students in their
learning process. We need to innovate, we need to create materials and ways of teaching.
We keep evolving and making new appearances.

Assistance to students monitoring their own learning: This does not mean to allow them
to navigate through websites they want. The teacher has to use a specific divide or tool to
incorporate into their learning. Not every website is good for them so we need to tell them
that we are using this one for this reason and for this purpose and make them know that
there is a reason why we are using this.

Word Processing and English Teaching

Importance of Word Processors

The text emphasizes the significance of word processors, particularly in English studies.
Programs like Microsoft Word are considered effective tools for text handling, document
construction, and preparing both printed and online content. While there's a blurred line
between word processors and desktop publishing systems, word processors are praised for
their versatility in various writing tasks.

Word Processor as a Writing Tool

Word processors are seen as valuable for any text-based task beyond mere typing. They
offer an attractive and adventurous way to draft and edit content, especially in teaching
writing. Word processing programs provide tools such as spellcheck, thesaurus, and
grammar facilities, enhancing students' writing quality. Typing can be time-consuming, but
the ability to copy electronic text from online sources facilitates this process.

Documents and Possibilities

Documents created with word processors can be easily transferred to other electronic
publishing applications. Teachers and students can use word processors for a range of
writing tasks, from letters and reports to newspapers and instruction booklets. The mastery
of word-processing skills opens up unlimited possibilities for teachers in their work.

Concerns about Spellcheckers and Grammar Checkers

The text raises concerns about the use of spellcheckers and grammar checkers. Questions
are posed about whether these tools might distort the true representation of a child's work,
hinder their focus on compositional aspects, or cause insecurity when questioning valid
English spellings. The contentious issue of using these tools in schools is acknowledged.

Future of Word Processing in English Teaching

The discussion concludes with considerations for the future of word processing in English
teaching. Suggestions for developing word processing software tailored for English teaching
needs are outlined, emphasizing features like easy drafting, proofing, and collaborative
planning tools.

Transformations: Ways of Working with Etext

Introduction to Etext
This section introduces the concept of etext, digitally-stored text, and expresses a concern
among English teachers that students might copy etext without processing its content.

Activities to Address Concerns

To address this, the text suggests transformation activities. These activities involve
analyzing and modifying text to develop editing skills. Some proposed activities include
rewriting for different age groups, changing the purpose or viewpoint of a piece, shortening
or expanding a text, changing its form, genre, or style, and translating into the style of
another century.

Using Web Resources and the Internet in English

General Considerations
This section begins with general considerations for accessing material from the Internet in a
classroom setting. It highlights the global nature of Internet content, the need to filter
inappropriate material, and the importance of supervision by teachers.

Three Dynamics of the Internet

The Internet is described as a dynamic communication system with three basic vectors:
downward (resource dynamic), lateral (communication dynamic), and upward (publication
dynamic). Teachers and students can benefit from these dynamics for information retrieval,
communication, and publication.

Internet Resources for English Studies

The text explores the potential of the Internet for English studies. It mentions the variety of
information available, from online libraries and global news to sites for children's learning
and entertainment. It emphasizes the dynamic nature of the Internet, allowing users to view,
communicate, and publish content.
Activities Using Internet Resources
The text provides ideas for using ICT and Internet resources for studying novels. Activities
include creating chapter summaries, tables, creative emails, illustration montages, text
analysis through hypertext links, transformations, marketing artifacts, character viewpoints,
text searches, commentaries, and background information databases.

Conclusion
The section concludes by highlighting the pragmatic alternatives the World Wide Web offers
to traditional approaches in English studies. It emphasizes the importance of adapting to and
utilizing new media for success in language education. The challenges and limitations of the
Internet are acknowledged, but the potential for extending English Studies into new areas is
recognized.

UNIT 3: ENGLISH TEACHER AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

3.1. HOW TO STUDY THIS UNIT

3.2. DIGITAL COMPETENCE

Order 2/2006. 3rd May in Education: Integrates and establishes Key Competences . Key
Competences is something that comes from the European Commission in a tempt to
enhance quality in our system, in our educational system.

Why are these necessary? —--------> To bring together the Spanish educational system
and the international demands. So The European Commission says “students all over
europe have to do this and this” and the Key Competences are the interpretation of all those
commands.

What are Key Competences?

“Key competences are a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the
context. They are particularly necessary for personal fulfillment and development, social
inclusion, active citizenship and employment”.

Key Competences are a factor of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. They are
very varied and they contribute to the motivation and satisfaction of work. These have to be
acquired by young people and adults. By young people when they finish their compostary
educational training, this will bill the map for adult life. And also adults should acquire them
through their processes of developing updating skills.
Key Competences are: not all of them are related to ICTs.

• Communication in the mother tongue : the ability to express and interpret concepts,
feelings and facts in an oral and in a written way.
• Communication in foreign languages : This is important for us. In addition to what we
have already said before, mediation and intercultural understanding has to take place in this
competence. It depends on different factors as the proficiency someone has in English
language.
• Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology :
Mathematical competence is not only about counting, but also to solve ranger problems in
everyday situations. Basic competences deal with a technology as for example the use and
application of knowledge and methodologies that explain the natural world: why does an
animal act like this,...
• Digital competence: It involves the use of information and the basic skills in information
and communication technology.
• Learning to learn: The ability to organize oneself in terms of learning. If you are working
individually or in a group making students aware of the methods or the opportunities.
• Social and civic competence : It refers to personal, interpersonal and intercultural
competence and the formal behavior of people or individuals. We are dealing with an
understanding of coats of customs.
• Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship: The ability to turn ideas to actions, it involves
creativity, innovation and risk taking. Also it fosters the ability to plan and manage projects in
order to achieve personal objectives.
• Cultural awareness and expression: This involves the appreciation of critical personal
ideas, experiences and emotions in the world of media. When we deal with this competence
we always deal with music, painting, literature,...

According to Allan Martin (2005), digital literacy includes these key elements:
3.3 OUR ROLE

The role of the teacher and of the technology are not changeable, both are necessary. Both
are complementary. Both played different roles in teaching experiences, both of them are
necessary. So the teacher is in charge of assessing the student and the level of knowledge
a student has in the language.

After testing the level of proficiency, the teacher is in charge of developing a syllabus so he
or she has to create a syllabus and when creating the syllabus normally some technologies
can be involved, for example: word processor. But it is the teacher who has to make all the
decisions.

The next step would be to develop a lesson plan again by the teacher and again some
technology might be involved in this, for example the use of an audio file in class. If the
activity is limited the technology takes over the control of the class.

The good thing about technology is that it is available at all times. It allows the new
technology devices to allow learners to be connected all times performing different tasks
adapted to the type of technology they have.

Some tips for teachers:

- Be ready and prepared: So check in advance what you are going to do and what
you are going to teach in class, make sure your apps and your web-sites are alive
and are running, so did not disappear or they are not using anymore and make sure
that they are accessible and obviously that they are appropriate.
- Be patient: Sometimes the internet does not work.
- Be critical: There are thousands of resources so you have to choose which ones are
appropriate and which ones are not, and which ones are useful and which ones are
not.

Our teaching practice is driven by pedagogy and not by the amount of IT tools we use

3.4 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT ISSUES

• Know your students: It is important that we know our students. Know our students
individually and as a group. If we know their needs we can provide them.
• Know your limitations: We should plan our lessons according to our proficiency when it
comes to ICT. So planning an orally ambitious session with ambitious tasks. Sometimes you
do not know how to handle it. This does not mean that the teacher has to relax. The teacher
has to develop confidence through training and keep evolving and keep learning new ways
of using ICT tools.
• Play to the strengths of your class: The students’ ICT abilities are going to be different
so we can use it to our advantage. If there is someone who knows better than other, maybe
we can play with the pairing, the gorup,.. or maybe one can help the other…
• Plan resources and access to ICT: Sometimes when students do not have any electronic
machine in the classroom they have to go to a computer room. This is something that we
have to take into account as well. It is not the same thing if we have to stay in our classroom
or if we have to go to another classroom. This is something that we have to take in mind
when we are planning our sessions.
• Make your expectations clear: We need to be very clear when telling our students the
objectives or how ICT is going to help us. Also we need to predict the instructions. And have
instructions in order to avoid them. We have also emphasize the learning opportunities that
ICT provides.
• Get to know the Internet: Sometimes the internet connection sets down at some points of
the day. So if the school has its internet we have to include it.

DOCUMENT: ICT IN ENGLISH:

‘Classroom management issues (p. 54-55)
