Insulating Heat Project

The document discusses designing and testing insulated food/drink boxes. Students are asked to suggest insulating materials and designs for boxes. They then conduct an experiment, filling boxes with hot water and measuring temperature changes over time to determine which materials best maintain heat.

OBJECTIVES
1. Suggest a design of insulated food/drink box
2. Make a design of insulated food/drink box by using everyday object.

STARTER
“Insulation is creating a barrier between the hot and the cold object that reduces heat transfer by either
reflecting thermal radiation or decreasing thermal conduction and convection from one object to the other”

What does it mean to conserve energy? (Answer: It means using energy wisely and efficiently.) Sometimes
people waste energy by not using it wisely. An object can often waste great amounts of energy. Most of an
object's energy use is for heating or cooling. One way we reduce the amount of energy required to heat or cool
is by using good insulation.
Insulation is a material or substance that is used to prevent the transfer of heat, electricity or sound. When
insulating an object, the quality (performance) of an insulation material is measured by how well it keeps heat
out or in. Typically, heat flows from warm areas to cool areas. When you touch something that is cold, heat is
actually leaving your body to try and warm the cool surface, creating a balance of energy. Insulation helps
to prevent that transfer of heat.
Many different materials are used for insulation. A layer of trapped air can serve as insulation, too!

OBJECTIVES
1. Make a self-designed insulated box.
2. Demonstrate precision and accuracy in making measurement.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

- Thermometer
- Hot water
- Self-designed insulated box

EXPERIMENT PROCEDURES

1. Prepare objects that you need to make your insulated box.

2. Set your objects according your design.
3. Fill your insulated food/drinks box with enough hot water.
4. Use the thermometer to measure the temperature in insulated box.
5. Write down the temperature and close your insulated box.
6. Place your insulated food/drinks box in secure spot. Make sure they are still securely wrapped.
7. Measure the temperature of the laboratory. What temperature does the thermometer read?
8. After 10 minutes, open the box and measure the water temperature with your thermometer. Also, feel the
temperature with your finger. How does it feel?
9. Put back your box, and repeat to measure it for each 10 minutes. Take note and compare your result with
other group.
10. For a better comparison, calculate the temperature difference from the beginning and end of the test for
each box (temperature beginning versus temperature after).
