Azure Virtual Desktop Setup

Installation and Configuring of Remote Desktop Client


To access Azure Virtual Desktop, we need to install client software called Remote
Desktop App. Below are the steps on how to install Remote Desktop Client and
configure to access AVD.

Steps to install and configure AVD on Windows


 Download and install Microsoft Remote desktop client
 If you are using a Deere assigned asset you can use JDSRS to request
installation of Remote Desktop Client
 If you are using a non-Deere asset download and install Remote Desktop
client via the link Remote Desktop Client
 Launch Remote Desktop Client.
 Click on Subscribe or Subscribe with URL on the Remote Desktop Window.

 Subscribe: Enter your John Deere email ID and proceed with login.
 Subscribe with URL: Use Workspace URL and click next and proceed with
login.
 Launch the Desktop by double clicking on the desktop icon in the Remote
Desktop client

 You can also use Web Client Remote Desktop Web Client to login to AVD.
 User connecting from an external network would require authenticating
via Okta
 To register to Okta, follow the Okta MFA Registration

Steps to install and configure AVD on Mac


 If you are using a Deere assigned asset you can use Self-service for
installing Remote Desktop Client (Microsoft Remote Desktop 10)
 If you are using a non-Deere asset download and install Remote Desktop
client via the link Remote Desktop Client for MAC
 Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 once installed and go to
workspaces tab and click on Add workspaces.

 Now provide the URL associated to workspaces as shown below


URL: Workspace URL

 Now Sign in with your John Deere Email ID and password

 Launch the Desktop by double clicking on the desktop icon in the Remote
Desktop client

 You can also use Web Client Remote Desktop Web Client to login to AVD.

 User connecting from an external network would require authenticating


via Okta

 To register to Okta, follow the Okta MFA Registration

Linux OS
Currently Microsoft is working on developing Remote Desktop App for Linux OS

You can use Web Client Remote Desktop Web Client to login to AVD.

 User connecting from an external network would require authenticating


via Okta

 To register to Okta, follow the Okta MFA Registration

 Connect with web browser to Okta https://johndeere.okta.com/
 Type in your JDNET user ID in “Username” – tab – and your RACF/JDNET
password in “Password”. Click on Sign In.

 You will be presented with a screen showing five options for 2 nd factor
authentication.

Okta Verify – requires a “smart” phone. You will need to download the Okta
Verify application from their device’s apps store before registering for this
method of authentication. A signal is sent to your phone (which must be on and
accessible) that will require you to tap the Okta app to verify that the phone is in
your possession – no other action is required.

How to set up Okta Verify


 Click on Set Up
 Choose the device Type

 Download Okta verify application from the device app store and click on
next.

 Open the downloaded Okta Verify app on your phone, and tap on Add
Account, and click on Next
 As soon as you click on Add Account, a camera will open up
 Scan the QR code on your computer screen using the opened phone
camera.
 Wait until your device enrolls. It takes a while to enroll your device.
 When their device is successfully enrolled, you will be able to see a
message that the device is successfully enrolled with a green tick mark
 You are now set up with Okta Verify MFA

SMS Authentication – sends a six-digit text message to your phone that you
will need to type in on the Okta login screen to authenticate.
1. Click on “Set up SMS Authentication”
2. Enter your mobile number without country code
3. Click on “Send code”

4. As soon as you click on “send code”, you will be sent a 6-digit code as a text
message (The Verification code is “XXXXXX“) to your SMS device.
5. Open the text message and enter the 6-digit code in the next screen and hit
on verify. Be sure to delete the text message after authentication – it is only
good for a single use!

6. Now your mobile number is registered with SMS Authentication for MFA.

Voice Call Authentication – sends a voice message to a designated phone


number (can either be a land line or a mobile phone)
1. Click on set up Voice Call Authentication
2. Enter your phone number without country code, and enter if you have any
extension
3. Click on the “Call” button

4. As soon as you click on “call”, your phone will get a call from Okta.
5. Answer the call and listen to the 5-digit code.
6. Enter the 5-digit code from the call and hit on “verify”
7. Now your phone number is registered with Voice Call Authentication for MFA.

YubiKey – Please request a YubiKey through Deere Hardware Request URL.


Once received, this option can be selected.
1. Insert your YubiKey into an available USB port on your computer
2. Tap the YubiKey button

3. Done

We strongly recommend everyone to set up at least 2 methods of MFA.


This will allow you one method for normal MFA access, and a “backup” method in
case your normal method is not available (forgotten response, phone
lost/reimaged/broken/not usable, YubiKey lost/broken).

After setting up MFA options, click on “finish”.

The above authentication methods require the following devices:

1. The Okta Verify Mobile app (requires a smartphone),


2. SMS text messaging (requires an SMS-compatible phone)
3. Voice Message (requires access to phone number for call) or
4. YubiKey (can be ordered through http://hardwarerequest.deere.com)

 Type push to send a push notification to your phone, and then tap
“accept” on the phone app prompt. Or you can enter the code directly
from the Okta Verify app.
 Type SMS to receive a text message containing your code. Re-enter your
user id, password, and the code you receive via SMS.
NOTE: If you select this option, you will get an invalid credentials error
initially, which you need to ignore.
 Type call to receive a voice call containing your code. Re-enter your user
id, password, and the code you receive over call.
NOTE: If you select this option, you will get an invalid credentials error
initially, which you need to ignore.
 Tap your YubiKey to enter an OTP.

Applications

Users are encouraged only to use JDSRS to order and install the applications
inside their AVD.

Best Practices

 Always make sure to use the latest version of Remote Desktop Client.

 Always use a Stable Wi-Fi or LAN connection and avoid using Mobile
Hotspot or Dongle for best experience.

 Once done with your work we always encourage you to log off or restart
the machine.

 If you are disconnecting your VDI make sure that you quit the teams’
application from system tray and reopen once, you log on back to VDI so
that Audio and Video devices are reconnected properly.

 Always use Microsoft Recommended Headsets for Teams .

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

1.How can I check the Latency of my local Network for AVD?

You can use AVD Experience Estimator link that provides you RTT (Round Trip
Time) of all the Azure regions from your local network.

RTT: Round Trip Time is nothing, but the time taken for your Keystrokes, Mouse
clicks to reach the Virtual Machine hosted in Azure and display the output on
your screen.

Less the Latency better the performance.

You can also use click on connection Bar as shown below and then click on show
more details to get RTT.

2.How to install applications in Azure Virtual Desktop?

You can use JDSRS inside Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) to install the applications.

JDSRS: http://jdsrs.deere.com/esd

If at all you need to use JDSRS in your AVD, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge
are recommended. In case it is launched through Internet Explorer, please add it
to the compatibility view mode by clicking on settings on
IE>>Tools>>Compatibility View Settings>>Add (deere.com) and click OK. The
page will refresh, and you should be able to see your new AVD machine name in
JDSRS.

3.Can I use Teams video calling feature in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)?

Yes, by default Azure Virtual Desktop supports Video calling feature.

4.How can I retrieve my data from AWS/JD asset to Azure?

5.Know Limitations of Optimized Teams inside Azure Virtual Desktop

Below are a few Limitations when we are using Optimized teams inside Azure
Virtual Desktop.

 Background change and Blur background.

 Request for Control

 And you won't be able to take screenshot while in screen sharing

Note: Currently Microsoft is working on introducing the features.

6.JDSRS page is showing as not licensed?

You can try restarting the browser by closing all the browsers inside AVD and
then reopen JDSRS page.

7.How to change Display settings of AVD?

By default, the display settings are set to use full screen and all monitors.

To change the display settings right click on the Desktop icon which is assigned
to you and click on settings as shown below.

Here in the example, we have right clicked on the Icon Pilot II and the Icon
name might be different for you.

By default, the Use default settings are ON

Click on the toggle switch to off and you will get below options where you can
change the display according to the requirement.

Note: Once the settings are changed you need to log off and login back to the
desktop for the settings to take effect.

If two or more desktops are assigned to you, you need to change the
display settings for each desktop individually.

8.Unable to reconnect or connect to AVD?

The issue arises if there is any stale entry of your session on the AVD machine or
your session is still trying to reconnect continuously in the back end.

You can go to system tray and right click on the Remote Desktop App as shown
below and can click on Disconnect all sessions and then you can try to login to
AVD machine.
