The potential negative effects of ChatGPT AI in Writing abilities of third-year students at

Hanoi Pedagogical University 2

In today’s technological world, ChatGPT has become a major contributor to ESL students’
learning process, especially in transforming approach to writing. Despite its immense potential in
enhancing students' writing proficiency, many students have demonstrated improper use of this
AI tool, leading to negative impacts on their writing skills. However, to date, only a limited
number of these effects have been identified. This study aims to investigate the potential harmful
effect that ChatGPT AI can have on writing skills among third-year students at Hanoi
Pedagogical University 2 (HPU2). Data for this study were collected using a mixed-methods
approach with survey questionnaires to evaluate the frequency and efficiency with which
students apply the ChatGPT tool when writing essays. Findings and discussions from the study
show that ChatGPT has reduced the creativity of writing and exhibited some unnatural word
usage, ultimately affecting the overall outcomes. Furthermore, the study also indicates the
problem of students overrelying on AI tools when writing. Finally, this research hopes to
contribute to the broader goal of enhancing students’ abilities to utilize ChatGPT AI more
effectively to improve their writing skills by addressing the potential errors. Educators can better
support students' language learning journey by identifying practical approaches to ChatGPT AI
to improve learners’ writing skills.

Today’s era is often referred to as the technological era with machinery used in almost every
aspects of lives. These advanced technologies have transformed the way learning approach,
especially with the introduction of various Artificial intelligence (AI) support platforms (Liu &
Ren, 2022). These tools have made it much faster and simpler to apply learning materials to
tasks.
Since the introduction of ChatGPT, this AI tool has been known as a helpful platform for
students' education, espectially in the field of writing, which is commonly recognized as one of
the most challenging English skills to master. Writing , according to (), require more precise
lexical and grammartical items use than any other English skills since any small errors can affect
the overall writing flow and create comprehension gap. (theem)
With its ability to generate ideas, use a wide range of vocabulary, and ensure correct grammar to
a certain level, many ESL learners rely on ChatGPT to write essays or complete assignments
(Wang & Guo, 2023).
While this AI tool has the potential to improve writing outcomes, it is essential to acknowledge
the significant short and long-term negative impacts it can have on students' learning journey,
which are often overlooked by most users. However, there is limited previous evidence focused
on these potential threats when using ChatGPT for writing. It would be of special interest to
investigate these problems and identify the errors caused by ChatGPT users.
The goal of this study is to explore how the use of ChatGPT impacts the writing process and
outcomes of third-year students at HPU2. Ultimately, the aim is to determine the most common
errors and problems that students encounter. By looking at what students think about ChatGPT,
how they use it, and what happens as a result, the paper hope to understand exactly how it
influences their writing abilities. This thesis documents several key contributions to the field of
education. By addressing the common errors students make when using the AI tool, the study
hopes to help teachers develop more suitable methods for assigning tasks and facilitating the
learning process for ESL students.
Recent theoretical developments have revealed that overusing ChatGPT has more harmful effects
than it seems.

Mahapatra (2024) reported instances where the use of this tool could lead to a lack of motivation
to be creative and an overreliance on its assistance.
In different scenarios, the users could also be seen using inauthentic sources for their ideas while
using the tool, affecting the overall authenticity of their writings. Additionally, ChatGPT can
suggest unnatural word choices and grammatical items, resulting in a decrease in the fluency of
essays and creating comprehension difficulties (Khalifa & Albadawy, 2024).
