Tutorial 3

The document discusses dynamic force analysis using graphical solutions. It provides examples of determining forces on mechanisms using acceleration polygons and inertial forces. Tutorial questions are presented on finding forces on piston-slider, linkage, and four-bar mechanisms at different positions and velocities.

Dynamics of Machinery (23MECH07I)

Tutorial 3: Dynamic force analysis –

Graphical solution

At the end of this session the student should have a complete understanding of the following concepts:

• Newton's Laws of motion and dynamics of particles and rigid bodies.

• Dynamic force analysis using graphical solution method.

Tutorial Questions

1. Find the force exerted by the piston of the shown crank slider mechanism in the given
position graphically. The torque supplied by the crank shaft is equal to 50 N.m cw. Find
the reaction at the supports neglecting the effect of the mass of the connecting rod.

Given data:
m2 = 5 kg m4= 0.5 kg
I2 = 0.4 kg.m2 I4 = 0.05 kg.m2
CG2 = (0,0) CG4 is at the wrist joint of the slider
ω2=20 rad/s α2= 0 rad/s2

3. The four-bar linkage of has a constant input angular velocity ω1 = 200 rad/sec clock-
wise. clockwise. This results in the following accelerations:

aG2 = 34,500 ∠ 298° in⁄s2 α2 = 2670 rad⁄s2 ccw

aG3 = 14600 ∠ 294° in⁄s2 α3 = 6940 rad⁄s2 cw

Coupler link 2 weighs 1.2 lb and has a mass moment of inertia about center of mass, equal
to0.03 lb. s 2 . Follower link 3 weighs 1.0 lb and has a mass moment of inertia about its
center of mass, equal to Determine all bearing forces and instantaneous input torque by
a graphical solution.

4. Determine the magnitude and location of the equivalent offset inertial force for the con-
necting rod, link 2, of the slider-crank mechanism for the position shown in the figure.
The crank has a constant angular velocity of 100 rad/s counterclockwise. The mass of the
connecting rod is 0.2 kg, and the moment of inertia about the center of mass, is 300 kg
.mm2. Also, determine the crank torque required for dynamic equilibrium at the position
shown.
