• Food habits differ according to the place a person lives in different seasons.
• Food is thus available in different varieties.
• For example: chapatis are famous in North India while rice is famous in South India.
• Some food items can be eaten raw such as fruits and vegetables while some are prepared by
mixing different food items such as dosa, idli, cakes etc.
• So, what do we call different food items that makes our food tasty??

Ingredients or food materials can be obtained from plant sources and animal sources.

Plants are one source of our food and we consume


almost all parts of the plants such as leaves, stems,
roots, fruits, and seeds that are considered to be
edible (eatable) parts.

Some plants have two or more edible parts.


For example: seeds of mustard plants give us oil
and the leaves are used as a vegetable.

Different Sources of Plants: Fruits

Fruits: We get edible fruits from many plants. Fruits are rich in minerals and vitamins.
For Example:
• Mangoes, apples and bananas are fleshy fruits.
• Walnuts and almonds are dry fruits.
• Oranges, lemons and amla are citrus fruits.

Anything that has seeds is the ‘fruit’ of the plant but may not necessarily be taken raw.

Different Sources of Plants: Vegetables


Parts of plants such as roots, stems, leaves flowers and seeds are eaten as food.

• We eat plant roots in the form of carrot, turnip, radish and beetroot.
• We eat stems of some plants such as sugarcane, asparagus, sweet potato. We also eat underground
stem in the form of ginger, potato and onion.
• Leaves of plants like spinach, lettuce, cabbage, coriander, mint, basil are used as leafy vegetables.
• Flowers of certain plants like cauliflower, banana flower, pumpkin flower and broccoli are used as
vegetables.
• Corn, peas are seeds.

Grains are the seeds of the plants which store food and can be used after proper treatment.
Types of grains
• Cereals:
• Pulses:
When the seeds begin to grow (germinate), it is called as Sprouts. They are rich in proteins,
carbohydrates and vitamins.

Grains: Cereals and Pulses


Cereals: are rich sources of carbohydrates obtained from
food crops with monocot seeds. Eg: Wheat, rice, and
maize.

Pulses: They are a rich source of proteins and are


obtained from seeds of leguminous plants. For example:
Kidney beans (rajma), pigeon pea (arhar), black gram
(urad), grams (chana), peas etc.

Most of the oils are obtained by crushing the seeds or the dried fruits of the plants.
Example : coconut , mustard , sunflower , soybean and olive

They have no food value and are used for adding flavor to the food. They are in the form of powders
or seeds that make our food tasty.
Example : red chillies , turmeric , cumin seeds , mustard seeds , cloves and coriander etc.

Beverages are the drinks other than water.
Tea is obtained from the leaves of the tea plant and coffee from the beans of the coffee plant.
