CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Decision making requires a define choice between

two or more alternatives course of actions that are available. There are times in
everyone’s lives where decisions have to be made.It is one of the most important
aspects in life and work because of its strong link to success and effectiveness.
Choosing a strand is one of the most life-altering decisions that an individual can
make, and choosing the right strand is a stressful process for upcoming Senior High
School students. It can be a task, which needs to be made or a difficult situation involving
Several issues for decision making.”Making a decision implies that there are
alternatives
Choices to be considered, and in such a case we want not only to identify as many of
these alternatives as possible but to choose the one that fits on”.(Harris,1980)

In 2013,the Philippines began the K-12 Basic Education

Program,a major overhaul of the country’s educational system. This was a radical
change to the foundational curriculum in the country.K-12,proposed by former president
Benigno Simeon Aquino,Jr.is meant to improve the Philippines’educational system by
bringing its elementary and secondary schools up to international recognition. The
secondary school system in the Philippines has undergone significant alternation as a
result of the K to 12 programs.Specifically, adjustments are being made to the
organizational framework, instructional, and evaluative criteria. The most obvious shift is
he split between Junior High and Senior High, adding two years to the secondary
education process.

In 2016,the very first Filipino kids to complete High School

flocked to classrooms. Some students and parents were still in the dark about certain
aspects of the new senior high schoolcurriculum during the first few years of
implementation. The new K-12 program requiresstudents to specialize in one of eight
tracks based on their post-graduation goals, in addition tomastering the basic
curriculum. One can specialize in one of four areas: academics, arts, and design,
sports, or technical and vocational careers. So, 10th graders are currently deliberating
about what major to choose in senior high school. In accordance with DepEd
memorandum no.41, s.2015, the Department of Education (DepEd) has established the
Career Guidance Program (CGP) for rising seniors in secondary schools. According to
former DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, the Career Guidance Program helps
students in Grade 10 decide which Senior High School (SHS) track is best for them by
providing them with information about their options and helping them weigh the pros
and cons of each.

Multiple authors, including Dupont & Gingras (1991), Gati

& Saka (2001), Julien (1999), and Super (1990), have emphasized the significance of
adolescent self-exploration and career exploration. According to Taveira et al., job
discovery is an especially stressful time for teenagers. As a defense mechanism,
adolescents may try to shift the onus of professional decision-making onto others, or
they may put off making a decision altogether, both of which can have negative
outcomes, according to research by Gati and Saka (2001). According to Larson and
Majors (1998), teenage worry about job choices may actually be adaptive, since it
encourages youth to seek guidance and reduces the likelihood that they would make
rash choices. Choosing a major or minor isn't the only major decision that new SHS
students will have to make; choosing a track is just as crucial.

The path they choose will have lasting effects, so they

should think carefully about it (Basavage1996). As a result, it falls largely on the
shoulders of educators and guidance counselors to help their students prepare for the
future. Young people's futures may be profoundly impacted by the path they choose to
follow. It may be indicative of one's future educational attainment and earning potential.
Research has also shown that there is a wide variety of influences on students choice of
majors and careers. However, the elements have varying degrees of influence on
different students. In light of the foregoing, the researcher decided to investigate the
factors that influence the course selection of incoming senior high school students. The
reason why we need to conduct this research is because we want to lessen the problem
of shifting academic track; to help the Grade-10 students in the assimilation of their
interest as they choose for final assertion of their tracks; and as well as to help Grade-
10 students to integrate their passion and talents within their chosen tracks.

1.2Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the different factors
influencing the Grade-10 students of Assisi High School of Siquijor Incorporated
(AHSSI) in choosing a track/strand to enroll in the school year of 2023-2024.

Specifically,it seeks to answer the following questions:

1.What strand/track do they plan to take up in Senior High?

2.Is the strand/track aligned with the course they want to take up in college?
3.How does confusion affects the students choice in selecting track?
4.What is the importance of knowing the influences that might affect the choice of
students in selecting track?
5.What makes them confused in terms of choosing the right track/strand?

1.3Significance of the Study

This study is significance to the following:

These studies are important in a variety of ways. For starters, the findings

of this study will benefit students, parents, and teachers by offering insights into the
Senior High decision process. Moreover, the findings may provide a useful tool for self-
discovery by providing a framework for assessing appropriate senior high
strand/track.The outcome of this study should support the students in choosing the
correct and suitable track/strand for them.

Students
This research assists students in choosing the right strand/track that is
connected in their college course. This will serve as their awareness and to help them
find their career direction.
Teachers and Parents

They will also be more likely to provide wise counsel to their

Children and students for the chosen strand.

1.4Scope and limitations of the Study

This study deals with the factors influencing the

Students in choosing their academic track/strand in Senior High at Assisi High School of
Siquijor Incorporated (AHSSI)during the school year 2023-2024.This study is focused
on the Grade 10 students in Assisi High School of Siquijor Incorporated (AHSSI) who
are having hard time deciding on what academic track/strand to take. This study was an
investigation on the factors affecting the choices of the students on which track they
would take for Senior High School. This study is only limited to the grade 10 students of
Assisi High School of Siquijor Incorporated(AHSSI).This study mainly focuses on the
factors such as the profiles of the students, family influence, financial condition, personal
interest, and job opportunities. There may be more factors however;those would not be
within this study.

1.5Definition of key Terms

The following terms are operationally defined for better

Understanding of the readers.
Decision-making refers to help start visualizing what you want to
do,and therefore choosing the right track to
jump start your career.

Factors refers to the circumstances,person,condition,or

Influence that bring about certain affect;family
background,academic experience,
recommendation of others,and educational
aspiration. These are some of the factors that
could affect students’ decision in choosing a
track/strand.

Career a students choice by interest or the path of

his/her chosen profession in the future.

Interest these are qualities or things that attract one’s

attention and make a person want to learn
more about something or to be engaged on it.
CHAPTER 2

2.1RELATED REVIEW OF LITERATURE

According to Irish Yvonne Mae O. Ambong,,Senior High School is two

years of specialized upper secondary education; students may choose a specialization
based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define
the content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. SHS subjects fall
under either the Core Curriculum or specific Tracks (Official Gazette, 2012). Senior High
School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grades 11
and 12. In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of
their choice (http://k12philippines.com/, n.d). The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten
and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior
High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for
mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for
tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneur ship.
Each student in Senior High School can choose among three tracks: Academic;
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic track includes
three strands: Accountancy, Business Management (ABM); Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS); and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM).
Students undergo immersion, which may Include earn-while-you-learn opportunities, to
provide them relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen track (Official
Gazette, 2012).

The earning potential of your chosen profession is likely to be factor that

influences your career path. You may find one aspect of your career is more financially
rewarding than another, or that working your way through the ranks holds greater
financial incentive than staying in the same job. Your personal financial needs are also
likely to influence the career choices you make. Opportunity is the third factor that has
shaped career choices for students. Opportunity may influence how students have
perceived their future in terms of the reasonable probability of a future in particular
career fields. The issue of poverty has played an important determining role in the
opportunities available to all (McQuerrey, 2006) .
“Personality” plays an important role in the choosing of the right
career. A student‟s personality must be self motivated type, as to investigate career
possibilities from early on in their lives, and not the procrastinating type that waits till
they are compelled to decide. Students must take seriously the role grades play in
limiting opportunities in the future. Splaver went on to say “It is important for you to have
a good understanding of yourself, your personality, if you are to make intelligent career
plans”. (Splaver 2000, p. 12). perception of being suitable for particular jobs also has
been found to be influenced by a number of factors including ethnic background, year in
school, level of achievement, choice of science subjects, attitudes and differences in job
characteristics (McQuaid and Bond, 2003).

Most of the students lack adequate information regarding various

careers hence the choices that they make are embedded in their perception of the ideal
job and the subjects they study in secondary school (Taylor et al, 2004)Filipinos are
known to be competitive in the international community. However, our current education
system hinders us from becoming even more competitive. Starting in the 2012-2013
school year, the education system of the Philippines was enhanced from the ten years
of basic education to a 12-year program through an initiative called the K-12 Education
Plan sponsored by the Department of Education (HubPages Inc. 2016). The K-12
program offers a decongested 12-year program that gives students sufficient time to
master skills and absorb basic competencies. The K-12 program accelerates mutual
recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in other countries (K-12 Philippines,
2015).

One consistent finding in research suggests that adolescents’ own

aspirations are influenced by their parent’s aspirations or expectations. Parental support
and encouragement are important factors that have been found to influence career
choice. Children may choose what their parents desire simply to please them (Taylor et
al, 2004).

2.2Theory of Theoretical Perspective

According to allysa Mae anuada(march 2017) A career choice is important

because it determines your success in the next stages of your life (PAMS, n.d). One of
the tasks of high school students is to explore and plan for their postsecondary career
options. High school students are at the exploration stage of career development. Many
factors affect career choices of high school students. Identifying these factors would
give parents, educators, and industry an idea as to where students place most of their
trust in career selection process (Super, 1990).

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education;

students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity.
Each student in Senior High School can choose among three tracks: Academic;
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic track includes
three strands: Accountancy, Business Management (ABM); Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS); and Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and
Mathematics (STEAM). The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects
a student will take in Grades 11 and 12 (Official Gazette, 2012).
CHAPTER 3
3.1Research Design

In this study we used Descriptive Design. Descriptive Design is used to

describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. It does not
answer questions about how/when/why the characteristics occurred. Rather it
addresses the "what" question (what are the characteristics of the population or
situation being studied? The characteristics used to describe the situation or population
are usually some kind of categorical scheme also known as descriptive categories.
Descriptive research is defined as a research method that describes the characteristics
of the population or phenomenon that is being studied. This methodology focuses more
on the “what” of the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject.
Furthermore, this study is also subject to use qualitative research design in order to
know what will be the opinion or the knowledge of the respondents with the
questionnaire. It is subjective and aims gathered information or answer came from the
respondents who answers "why" and "how" question. By this strategy there will be high
possibility that this study will answer it's problem came from the data gathered in
respondents.

3.2Research Environment

This study will be held in Assisi High School of Siquijor

Incorporated(AHSSI) with the respondents of grade 10 students. It was located in the
Municipality of Siquijor(capital)Province.Region VII-Central Visayas.Poblacion
Siquijor,Sta.Fe St.
3.3Research Respondents

This study will focus on the 53 grade 10 students

of Assisi High School with regards to their chosen academic track. They will respond to
the questionnaire that we will going to offer and the data that will be collected came
from the 53 grade 10 students of Assisi High School of Siquijor Incorporated.

3.4Research Instrument/Tools

The researchers conduct a schedule for the given

questionnaire, as an instrument for the data collection for this study. The 53 grade 10
students in Assisi High School, was ask to answer the given questions. The questions
that is being ask to the participants, aims to give information regarding to their chosen
academic track.
Conclusion

We conclude that this research is very helpful for the

upcoming Senior High students, because it will help them to choose the best
strand/track they want to take up in their Senior High School journey. Also, give
awareness to them,if their chosen strand/track was aligned in their college courses.
