Good day, Sir!

To add to the principle of TQM which is “Employee Involvement”, we also have “Employee
Training and Development”. Consistent with its belief that employees are valuable resources, SMC is
committed to (1) providing its employees with programs for their professional and personal growth; and (2)
promoting a culture of continuous improvement and learning. To be able to do this, I will be sharing some
examples of their training programs of SMC:

EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

SAN MIGUEL SCHOOL OF BREWING

READ: Created in 1975, San Miguel School of Brewing is the primary in-house institute of San Miguel Brewery
Inc. (SMB) for the development of its future brew masters, quality assurance professionals, technical
specialists, and brewery engineers.

To clarify, “San Miguel School of Brewing” is not an actual school. Instead, it is just a term for an in-house
technical training that offers various programs spanning all levels of professional brewing, starting from the
basic brewing course for newly hired personnel to the advanced brewing course necessary to qualify the most
senior of its technical personnel known as “brew masters”.

Today, “San Miguel School of Brewing” is an accredited provider of Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). This means that the employees that undergo this
training not only gain the knowledge and skills needed to advance their careers but they can also obtain the
necessary CPD credits to maintain their licenses. As we can see in this picture,

If we go to the list of accredited programs in the website of PRC, “The Fundamentals of Brewing Course” by the
“San Miguel School of Brewing” will show up.

Accordingly, the course is to be taken for a total of 40 hours for 5 days. This will be equivalent for 14 CPD units
for disciplines like Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (LMDP)

READ: LMDP is an intensive 3-module program with 13 courses run by the Ateneo Graduate School of
Business. The program brings together middle managers of midsize and large companies, higher-level
managers of small companies, managers of non-profit organizations, and entrepreneurs who want to sharpen
their management and leadership skills.

Earlier, I discussed “San Miguel School of Brewing” which is an in-house form of training. In contrast to that,
SMC also has external partners for leadership programs. One of them is the Ateneo Graduate School of
Business which offers the “Leadership and Management Development Program”.

As we can see here in this picture, the 3 modules of the program are about 1) Core Management Skills; 2) Core
Functional Skills and 3) Integrative Courses.

The most current schedule I can find for this program will start on April 24, 2024 – September 21, 2024 for the
60th LMDP. However, just the same, the schedules are:

PETRON DEALER MANAGEMENT COURSE (DMC)

READ: For those wanting to be a dealer of Petron service stations, once they pass the screening process, they
will be endorsed for enrollment in a 4-week Petron Dealer Management Course (DMC) to gain a deeper
understanding of the business and a more comprehensive training.

The DMC will be conducted at “Petron Sales Academy” which is located at Palumpong St., Pandacan, Manila.
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of details available about what will be covered in the training. However, I
think it is safe to say that it is meant to provide the dealer with an understanding of the totality on how to
operate a gasoline service station. This includes safety protocols, equipment operations, customer service,
inventory management, marketing and others.

So, even after the dealer graduates from the course, Petron will continue to guide them in running their
service station. On their first few days of business, they are to expect that Petron will visit and hold hands-on
training with them and their personnel to ensure their station’s seamless operations.

CONCLUSION

To conclude, I have decided to specifically share these 3 examples of training programs to show how SMC
prioritizes the continuous learning of their employees at all levels. Such that, they have training programs for
employees that work directly inside their company like the “San Miguel School of Brewing” for operating
personnel and the “Leadership and Management Development Program” for managerial personnel. At the
same time, they also have training programs for employees that work indirectly outside their company like the
“Petron Dealer Management Course” for dealers.

To relate “Employee Training and Development” with “Total Quality Management (TQM)”, when employees
feel valued, empowered, and equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, they are more likely to
actively engage in TQM initiatives, therefore leading to improved quality outcomes and organizational
performance.
