Foundation Project Proposal 1
Foundation Project Proposal 1
What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a broader
range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
The two main things I have learnt that will help me convey my message are the InDesign
workshop and the book making project. As I plan to use InDesign to make the content of
my book then print it out and create the book using the skills I learnt from the book making
project. The techniques I used in the book making project that I would take forward include
book binding and InDesign which I plan to use to make a book. I will also print out some
larger images.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.
What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the
viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market
your work?
In a way my work offers entertainment. Though I will only be making a single book and a
single copy of each big print (I may print out some smaller prints to sell). If people were
interested in buying the book I could find a company that could print small numbers of
these books for me. I could also produce prints in varying sizes. The times I would see if
this work had a market would be during my exhibition in the university. Though I plan to
find other places to exhibit it around Bristol. The main ways I would advertise it would be
through my Instagram as well as word of mouth. I could also sell prints and books at some
of the many markets around Bristol. Another way I could bring attention to an exhibition
would be by making stickers and posters and putting them up around Bristol.
Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
I want my work to connect with people on a fundamental level, in a way that anyone can
connect emotionally to my images without the need for context. I also want each to evoke
different emotions depending on their subject. In a way this ideal response may make the
question why they are having an emotional response. As well as conveying the idea that we
are all the same in a way and should lookout for one another.
Task 1 – Part 1
The German director and actor Werner Herzog talks about what he calls “ecstatic truths”.
These are expressed in art by moments that all humans can understand as they are moments
that every human has experienced whether that be love, fear, joy or longing. These
experiences that we share transcend our differences in culture and wealth. I plan compile
photos that I've already taken that I feel encapsulate these “ecstatic truths” then I will
question the ethics of the way I shoot and ask how I can shoot in a way that is; respectful to
my subjects, conveys what I want it to and still be an authentic moment that I haven't
manipulated or altered.
My current idea it to display a book on a small plinth with a black material covering it and
then have a few prints displayed at different hights and sizes to make it stand out. The book
will be small and fit into the hand nicely so you can pick it up and read it with easy. It will
mostly consist of images combining colour and black and white it will also have page
numbers and small bits of text giving context and titles to some of the images, but these are
still undecided, and things will change as I start to create the book. Some of the main
things I will use are; Adobes lightroom to edit and colour grade my images and bridge to
sort and curate my images. I will use InDesign to design the content of my book and fit the
images in. Once I have done these things digitally, I will then move onto the practical
making. I will use the printers in the university to print large high-quality photos as well as
the pages for my book. I will then need a guillotine to cut the pages to size and a bone fold
to fold them as well as string to bind the pages. I will also need grey board, glue and either
paper or fabric to create the hardback cover of my book.
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
All the skills I will need for this task I will need to improve thought some more than others
for example I have some experience editing my images and so this will be easy and I will
just need to watch a few YouTube videos first to make my editing process more efficient
then as I work to help me use more complex tools within the software. On the other hand, I
have no experience in InDesign past the day workshop we did so I will need to spend much
more time learning about this. First, I will rewatch the lesson as it was recorded then I will
work on it in class asking for help from my lecturer and at home I will watch YouTube
videos like I will do for the photo editing. For printing out images to sell and display I have
no prior knowledge and will need to be taken through the entire process. My knowledge of
book binding is rudimentary at best but if I watch tutorials confer with my lectures and
make various test versions to not only learn how to make the book correctly but to insure it
works, looks, and feels the way I want it to. Then I believe I will be able to produce a
professional looking product to exhibit.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
My inspiration comes from my own interest in these topics and themes, from watching
YouTube videos on film photographers going to Sebastiao Salgado exhibitions or looking
at the ways books are bound and designed. Other pieces of inspiration include a book
called Positive Futures by Edd Gold. Some of the images taken in this book are of the
community I grew up in and I found the way he used both coloured and black and white
images interesting and that is one of the reasons I want to experiment with colour and black
and white images and how they can be used together. To push my research forward I will
ask people questions on their process of making photo books like Edd Gold or my uncle
who has created a book of his own on in father's hometown in Brazil. Reading about the
many processes and skill I will need to learn for my project will also push my
understanding forward I can access the plethora of book and papers the university library
has on offer.
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?
Adobe Lightroom and These applications can be I will need to use the tutorials from
InDesign. downloaded for free from Adobes creative cloud as well as
the university through the tutorials from YouTube. I will

my lectures the details of what quality
I should pint at, what sort of paper I
should use and if it should be matt or

Book Binding Many of the resources I will I will first need to find a fold that fits

on campus such as the grey of book I wish to create. I will do this
board. However, the tools I by asking my lectures as well as
will need I can access from doing my own research. Once I've

various prototypes to ensure it is the
right bind for my book and to practise
my skills.
Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste,
and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you
can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan
for the end of life of your object/s, how will you remove it from the studio at the end of the
exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling / disposal protocol for
the materials you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?
For this project I will be using new materials and not recycling any parts. Though in the
future once I have a better understanding of the tools and materials I'm using I may be able
to reuse paper and other materials to create my projects. I will however ensure my book
and prints last a long time I will do this by using a glue that has a neutral pH and I will do
more research on how to store them properly. If I were to sell my book I would either make
them by hand or find an ethical and sustainable company to print them for me.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, wood,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
The Exhibition and planning for it is a key part of this module and must be considered alongside your
own emerging project. What are you going to exhibit? How should it be presented? How have other
creatives presented similar work? Research is key to help you to identify formats, conventions, and
approaches to sharing your outcome.
