Module-4 - CPM and PERT
Module-4 - CPM and PERT
Many managers, who use the PERT and CPM techniques, have
claimed that these techniques drastically reduce the project
completion time.
Where A is a activity.
• Event: Event or node is either starting of an activity
or ending of an Event will not consume any resource,
but it simply represents either starting or ending of
an activity.

COMMON ERRORS
• Looping: (Cycling error) : Drawing an endless loop.
B
A
C
• Dangling: To disconnect an activity before the
completion of all the activities in a network diagram.

C
• Redundancy: if a dummy activity is the only activity
connecting from an event and can be eliminated.

Rules of network construction
1. Try to avoid the arrows that cross each other
2. Use straight arrows
3. No event can occur until every activity preceding
has been completed
4. An event cannot occur twice. (no loop)
5. An activity succeeding an event cannot be
started until that event has occurred.
6. Use arrows from left to right. (avoid mixing two
direction
7. Dummies should introduced only if it is
extremely necessary
8. The network has only one start event and one
end or terminal event.
Numbering the events
• Event number should be unique
• It should be sequential, from left to right
• The initial event, which has all outgoing event
without incoming even is numbered as 1.
• Number all new start events 2, 3, and so on.
Repeat this until the terminal event reaches.
Construction of Network
Ex-1: Construct a network for the project whose activities and precedence
relationships are as given below:
Activities A B C D E F G H I
Predecessor - A A - D B,C,E F D G,H
Solution:
Ex-2: Construct a network for the project whose activities and precedence
relationships are as given below:

Solution:
Ex-3: A < C, D, I; B < G, F; D < G, F; F < H, K; G, H < J; I, J, K < E
Solution: Given A < C, which means that C cannot be started until A is
completed. That is, A is the preceding activity to C. The above constraints can
be given in the following table.

Slack is defined as the difference between the latest and the earliest
event time.
Note: Slack is used for events only; whereas float is used for activities.
