Distinguishing Real and Apparent Dimensions
• A line measures 60 mm and is inclined at 300 with HP. It appears to be 35 mm long
in the Front View, and the front view makes an angle 450 with HP
• A line AB is 60mm long, makes an angle 250 with VP…
• The length of a line which is inclined at 400 with HP & 300 with VP is 80mm…

• A line appears to be 35 mm long in the Front View, and the front view makes an
angle 450 with HP, …
• As seen from the top, a line 60mm long & inclined at 300 with VP appears to be 40
mm long and inclined at 250 with VP…
• The projection of a line in VP appears to be 60 mm long…

Note: True length and true inclination to be drawn together, same case with apparent length
and inclination. DON’T mix true length and apparent inclination

Typical Notations-
Projection of Lines
Consider Line in 3D space: AB
• Top View: ab
• Front View: a’b’
• True Length in VP: a’b1’
• True Length in HP: ab2
• True inclination with VP(Φ) and
HP(θ): Inclination of XY line
with ab2 and a’b1’ respectively
• Apparent inclination with VP(β)
and HP(α): Inclination of XY
line with ab and a’b’ respectively

Engineering Drawing – I (EDRG 101)
Projection of Lines by Rotating Line Method-Steps
• Locate a point on the
line (Position wrt VP
and HP would be
given)
• Draw and label the
horizontal locus lines
from the point
• Based on the given
information, draw
the true length (with
true inclination) OR
the apparent length
(with apparent
inclination). Locate
the other extreme of
the line. Label the
point

Rotating Line Method-Contd
• From b1’(Locus of B in FV),
draw vertical projector up to
Locus of A in top view.
Locate point b1.
General Note: Draw vertical
projector from (one point in
one view) to (locus of
another point in another
view)
• With a as centre, ab1 as
radius, rotate the line up to
locus of B in top view.
Locate point b
• ab is the top view of AB
• Similar process for obtaining
a’b’ (FV of AB)

To conclude, write the apparent lengths

and inclinations as answers

Answers:
ab = 78 mm
a’b’ = 64 mm
α = 450
β = 550

True Length of AB : a’b1’ & ab2

FV : a’b’

TV : ab

True inclination with HP : Angle made

by a’b1’ with XY line

True inclination with VP : Angle made

by ab2 with XY line

Apparent Inclinations?

Distance betn the end projectors :

Horizontal distance betn a & b

1. A line AB 60mm long has one of its extremities 20mm in front of VP and 15mm above HP. The
line is inclined at 250 to HP and 400 to VP. Draw its projections.

2. A line PQ has its end P 15mm above HP and 10mm in front of VP. The end Q is 55mm above
HP, and the line is inclined at 300 to HP. The distance between the end projectors of the line when
measured parallel to the line of intersection of HP and VP is 50mm. Draw the projections of the line
and find its inclination with VP.

3. The mid point of a line AB is 60mm above HP and 50mm in front of VP. The line measures 80mm
and inclined at 300 to HP and 450to VP. Draw its projections.

4. The distance between the end projectors passing through the end points of a line AB is 40mm. The
end A is 20mm above HP and 15mm in front of VP. The end B is 45mm in front of VP. The line AB
appears as 65mm long in the front view. Complete the projections. Find the true length of the line and
its inclinations with the HP and VP.
