SURDS
Surds are numbers left in square root form.

Rules in surds:
2
(i) 𝑎√𝑏 + 𝑐√𝑏 = (𝑎 + 𝑐)√𝑏 (v) (√𝑎) = √𝑎 × √𝑎 = √𝑎 × 𝑎 = 𝑎
(ii) 𝑎√𝑏 − 𝑐√𝑏 = (𝑎 − 𝑐)√𝑏 (vi) √𝑎2 𝑏 = 𝑎√𝑏
(iii) √𝑎 × √𝑏 = √𝑎𝑏 𝑎 √𝑎
(vii) √𝑏 =
(iv) 𝑎√𝑏 × 𝑐√𝑑 = 𝑎𝑐√𝑏𝑑 √𝑏

Examples:
1. Without using a calculator simplify:
(i) √18 (iii) √90 (v) √98
(ii) √48 (iv) √108 (vi) √300
Solution
(i) √18 = √2𝑥9 = √2𝑥√9 = 3√2 (iv) √108 = √3𝑥36 = √3𝑥√36 = 6√3
(ii) √48 = √3𝑥16 = √3𝑥√16 = 4√3 (v) √98 = √2𝑥49 = √2𝑥√49 = 7√2
(iii) √90 = √9𝑥10 = √9𝑥√10 = 3√10 (vi) √300 = √3𝑥100 = √3𝑥√100 = 10√3
2. Without using a calculator simplify:
(i) √3 + √3 (iv) √80 + √20 − √45
(ii) 7√5 − √5 (v) √28 + √63 − 3√112
(iii) √50 + √32 − √18
Solution
(i) √3 + √3 = 2√3
(ii) 7√5 − √5 = 6√5
(iii) √50 + √32 − √18 = √2𝑥25 + √2𝑥16 − √2𝑥9 = 5√2 + 4√2 − 3√2 = 6√2
(iv) √80 + √20 − √45 = √5𝑥16 + √4𝑥5 − √9𝑥5 = 4√5 + 2√5 − 3√5 = 3√5
(v) √28 + √63 − 3√112 = 3√4𝑥7 + √9𝑥7 − 3√16𝑥7 = 6√7 + 3√7 − 12√7 = −3√7
3. Expand the following and simplify:
(i) 2(5 − √3) (iv) (3 + √3)(2 + √3)
(ii) √2(√6 − √2) (v) (√7 + √3)(√7 − √3)
2
(iii) √5(3√5 + 4√15) (vi) (4√5 + 3√2)
Solution
(i) 2(5 − √3) = 10 − 2√3
(ii) √2(√6 − √2) = √12 − √4 = √4𝑥3 − √4 = 2√3 − 2
(iii) √5(3√5 + 4√15) = 3√25 + 4√75 = 3𝑥5 + 4√3𝑥25 = 15 + 20√3
(iv) (3 + √3)(2 + √3) = 3(2 + √3) + √3(2 + √3) = 6 + 3√3 + 2√3 + √9 = 6 + 5√3 + 3
= 9 + 5√3
(v) (√7 + √3)(√7 − √3) = √7(√7 − √3) + √3(√7 − √3) = 7 − √21 + √21 − 3 = 4
2
(vi) (4√5 − 3√2) = (4√5 − 3√2)(4√5 − 3√2) = 4√5(4√5 − 3√2) − 3√2(4√5 − 3√2)
= 16 × 5 − 12√10 − 12√10 + 9 × 2 = 98 − 24√10
4. If (2√7 + 3√2)(4√7 − 5√2) = (𝑎 + 𝑏√𝑐) find the values of a, b and c.
Solution
(2√7 + 3√2)(4√7 − 5√2) = 2√7(4√7 − 5√2) + 3√2(4√7 − 5√2)
= 8 × 7 − 10√14 + 12√14 − 15 × 2 = 26 + 2√14
Basic Mathematics (NCIT 113) -UICT Onyait Justine Edmond +256775263103

𝑎 = 26, 𝑏 = 2, 𝑐 = 14
5. Express (2√5 + √2)(√5 + 3√2) in the form (𝑎 + 𝑏√𝑐) hence state the values of a, b and c.
Solution
(2√5 + √2)(√5 + 3√2) = 2√5(√5 + 3√2) + √2(√5 + 3√2)
= 2 × 5 + 6√10 + √10 + 3 × 2 = 16 + 7√10
𝑎 = 16, 𝑏 = 7, 𝑐 = 10

Rationalizing the denominator

This is the process of eliminating surds from the denominator
Note
𝑎
❖ To rationalize multiply top(numerator) and bottom(denominator) by √𝑏
√𝑏
❖ The conjugate surd of 𝑎 + √𝑏 is 𝑎 − √𝑏 and vice versa
𝑐
❖ To rationalize 𝑎+ 𝑏 multiply top and bottom by the conjugate of the denominator.

Composite functions
A composite function is a function, which combines two or more functions.
The function 𝑓1 𝑓2 (𝑥) is known as a composite function, where 𝑓1 (𝑥) and 𝑓2 (𝑥) are functions.
The result of 𝑓1 𝑓2 (𝑥) is the image of 𝑥 under 𝑓2 (𝑥) first followed by 𝑓1 (𝑥) .
