Outline

Module/course Summary
The aim of this module is to give students an understandable knowledge of what statistics may
offer to a wide array of disciplines and fields, with a special focus on business management
applications.
Using not strictly statistical procedures (i.e. demonstrations of theorems are not faced), the
students should be able to understand what data and analyses tell, and reproduce some of
what analysis literature usually fosters.

Module/course objectives
This course is designed to help students acquire a good intuitive grasp of statistics. Its main
objective is to enable students to develop the ability to choose relevant statistical methods
applicable to managerial situations and to interpret the results of these methods.
The course also introduces the use of software as a tool in statistical analysis.

Pre-requisite
Fundamentals of Mathematics

Assurance of Learning

This Module/course participates in the achievement of the following program objectives

Learning goal (LG) Learning objective (LO)

LG2: To be effective decision-makers LO2: To apply knowledge of business and
international management to complex issues and
situations both systematically and creatively

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge and understanding:

• Recognize different sorts of data and sources
• Understand what data may tell, and what an author made data tell from a dataset

Transferable Skills:
• Use statistical analyses in the future with awareness and autonomy, regardless of the
specific statistical package that might be available
• Understand which analysis runs according to a given source, dataset and heuristic necessity

Values and attitudes:

Quantitative methods may have a surprising and unexpected pay-back in values and attitudes.
They often help to understand not only what is more rational to do, but even what are our
cognitive and social biases. To this regard, it is important to identify them and know how to
use them.
