Name of the Examination: B.Tech. End Semester Examination
Branch EEE
Semester :06
Course Name :Electric Drives
Course Code: EED-324
Time: 3 Hours
Note : Attempt all the questions. Maximum Marks: 60
1. (a). Draw the block diagr'am of an electrical drive. Write the four functions of the power
modulator.
(b).
Explain the concept and need of load equalization. Can a flywheel be mounted on the motor
shaft of variable speed and reversible drives? Explain your answer.
(c).
A drive has following equations for motor and load torques:
T 1 -I- 2 wm ; = 31,5—
vm
Obtain the equilibrium points and determine their steady state stability
(4,4,4)
2. (a). Why current sensing is required in electrical drives? What are the common methods of
current sensing?
(b). A motor has heating time constant of 70 min and a cooling time constant of 90 min. When
run continuously on full-load of 400 KW, final temperature rise is 50° C
(i)
What load can be delivered by the motor for 10 min if the initial temperature rise is
zero?
(ii) When used in short time periodic duty cycle consisting of loaded period of 10 min
followed by no load period long enough for the motor to cool down, what will be
maximum load that motor can carry?
(iii)Determine the maximum load that motor can deliver when subjected to intermittent
periodic load cycle consisting of a load period of 10 min followed by a no load period of
15 min. Assume loss to be proportional to power 2
(6,6)
3. (a). You are given a separately excited DC motor
. Derive an equation, which states that the total
energy supplied by the source to motor during
a transient process consists of four different
components, and identify them. Let this motor is
started with constant applied voltage V and a
load torque. Derive expression for energy loss
in armature circuit resistance of the machine
under loaded and no load conditions
(6)
(b) Describe conventional Ward Leonard schemes used for speed control, starting braking and
reversing of de motors by drawing suitable block iagrams for each of them.
(6)
4. (a) Compare conventional and static ward leonard schemes.
(b) A 220 V, 1500 rpm, 50 A separately excited motor with armature resistance of 0.5 hms, is
fed fro a 3-phase fully controlled rectifier. Available AC source has a line voltage of 440 V, 50
Hz. A star-delta connected transformer is used to feed the armature so that motor terminal
voltage equals rated voltage, when conveter firing angle is zero.
(i) Calculte transformer turns ratio.
(ii)
Determine the value of firing angle when: (a) motor is running at 1200 rpm and rated
torque; (b) when motor is running at -800 rpm and twice the rated torque.
5 (a) Derive an equivalent circuit for the de dynamic braking of an induction motor and explain
why it is necessary to account for the saturation in the magnetic circuit. What are the
important features of dc dynamic braking in relation to other methods of braking of induction
motors.
(b)Explain the working and operation of the static krammer drive and why it has a low speed
range.
(c) What are the similarities between a brushless dc motor and a conventional dc motor? Why it
is known as a brushless dc motor? What are its advantages ovep onventional dc motors.
