Answer each question in the space provided.

Question 7 (6 marks)

The diagram shows a very simple electric motor.

A

(a) Is this an AC or DC motor? Justify your answer.

2

(a) When the coil starts rotating after the current is initially applied, the reading on the
ammeter decreases. Explain why.
2

Question continues on next page.

(b) In the space below, draw a sketch-graph to show how the torque ( ) would vary in
relation to angle ( ) between the plane of the coil and the field lines. Do this for two
complete rotations of the coil

(c) Describe, using an appropriate mathematical relationship, why a field like this is used
in a simple DC motor?
2
Question 9 (2 marks)

A coil consists of five turns of insulated copper wire. It is placed between the poles of two alnico
magnets as shown in the diagram. These magnets create a uniform magnetic field of 1.2 x 10-2 T.

30 cm

A current of 2.50 A is applied to the coil in the direction shown.

Calculate the maximum possible torque of the coil? 2

Question 10 (4 marks)

Homework Skills Question 13 (10 marks)

Students designed an experiment to measure the force applied to an iron mass by an electromagnet.
The diagram below shows the experimental set-up. The electromagnet was fixed above an iron
mass resting on a chemical balance, and a constant current was applied to the electromagnet.

The distance between the electromagnet and the iron mass was increased systematically and the
reading on the chemical balance was recorded.

The average reading for three separate trials was then converted to force units, as shown in the table
below.
