Module 4 - Structural Analysis of Frames
Introduction: A frame is composed of straight members connected
either by rigid (moment-resisting) connections or by hinged connections to form stable configuration. The members of a frame are usually connected by rigid joints, although hinged connections are sometimes used. A rigid joint prevents relative translations and rotations of the member ends connected to it, so the joint is capable of transmitting two rectangular force components and a couple between the connected members. Under the action of external loads, the members of a frame may be, in general, subjected to bending moment, shear, and axial tension or compression. A frame is considered to be statically determinate if the bending moments, shears, and axial forces in all members, as well as all external reactions, can be determined by using the equations of equilibrium. It is often necessary to draw shear and moment diagrams to design frames.
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the module, students are expected
to do a structural analysis of a frame. Specifically, the students can: 1. Calculate reactions at supports; 2. Draw shear diagram, bending moment diagram, and deflection curve; and 3. Calculate deflection and slopes in a frame.
Procedure for analysis of frames
The following is a procedure for constructing the shear and moment diagrams for a frame 1. Determine the support reactions for the frame, if possible. 2. Determine the joint reactions A, V, and M at the end of each member using the method of sections. 3. Construct both shear and moment diagrams just as in beams. 4. Compute for deflection. We will use the following sign convention: always draw the moment diagram on the compression side of the member. Determine the support reactions at pin A and roller C Cut member BC, solve for internal forces at joint B (Bx, By and MB). Transfer these forces (oppositely directed) to member BA. Draw V and M diagrams for members AB and BC. Deflections in Beams and Frames by Energy Method 1= external virtual unit load acting on the beam in the stated direction of Δ m = internal virtual moment in a beam caused by the external virtual unit load Δ = external joint displacement caused by the real load on the beam M = internal moment in a beam caused by the real load L = length of beam I = moment of inertia of cross-sectional E = modulus of elasticity of the beam
Similarly the rotation angle at any point on the beam can be
determined, a unit couple moment is applied at the point and the corresponding internal moment m have to be determined Example 1 Determine the displacement at point B of a steel beam E = 200 Gpa , I = 500(106) mm4 Example 2 Determine the Slope θ and displacement at point B of a steel Beam E = 200 Gpa , I = 60(106) mm4 Example 3
(a) Determine the slope and the horizontal displacement of point C on
the frame. (b) Draw the bending moment diagram and deflected curve. E = 200 GPa I = 200(106) mm4 REFERENCES:
