LOADING CALCULATION

4 LOADING CALCULATION Loading calculation shall be performed both for Cable Tray,
Cantilever Support and Anchor Bolts with reference to the ‘Design Installation Basis’ described on
Clause 3.
4.1 Cable Tray Loading Installation
Consider maximum nos. of cable will be laid on the tray is 9 x 4c-6 sq.mm on a mm cable tray
without spare space:
4.1.1 Weight of cable per meter: Reference to DUCAB Catalogue the weight of cable is

4C-6 Sqmm ➔ 760 kg/km

= 760 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑘𝑚 x 1𝑘𝑚/ 1,000𝑚

= 0.76 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑚
4.1.2 Total cable weight per meter for 9 cables: = 0.76 𝑘𝑔 /𝑚 x 9 nos.
= 6.84Kg/m
4.1.3 Maximum Cable Loading: On this section the maximum cable loading/weight shall be
calculated based on different span of the Tray length which correspond to span of support.
At 1.2-meter span as per the installation drawings:
= Total Cable Weight per meter = 6.84 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑚 x 1.2m = 7.2 kg/m

4.2.1 Weight of Tray:

Since maximum cable tray width to be used is 150mm width, with length of 3meter and
tray shall be supported every 1.2mtr (as per Sec.4.1.3), the maximum weight per support
shall be:
150mm → (2.71𝑘𝑔/l𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ X 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ/3 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟

150mm → 2.71 / 3 x 1.2

150mm → 1.084 Kg

4.2.4 Maximum Loading per Meter for 1-Horizontal Support:

= Total Cable Weight (as per Sec.4.1.3) x (for 1sets of cables in 1-Support)+Dead Weight
+ Weight of tray (as per Sec.4.2.3) x 1 (for 1sets of tray in 1-Support)

=7.2+1.69+1.084
=9.974 Kg

4.2.1 Horizontal Support Loading details:

Reference to 50*50*6 mm Catalogue the maximum strength for horizontal loading varies
per length, refer below table extracted from the catalogue:
4.2.2 Cantilever welded support Loading Capacity:
Moment of Inertia(I)= BD^3/12
= (50*50*50*50)/12)
=6250000/12
= 520833.33 mm^4
For a symmetrical angle, section Modulus, Z=BH^2/6
=50*50*50/6
= 20833.33mm^3
Allowable bending stress, Õ = 250 Mpa
Span length= 1200 mm
W= 2* 250 Mpa/1200mm
=416.67 N/mm
= 416.67 * 0.10197
=42.48 kg/m

4.2.5 Adequacy Check for Cantilever 50*50*6mm angle Loading Capacity:

Maximum Loading per 1.2 Meter <= Max. Loading Capacity @ 1.2m support spacing
9.974 kg <= 42.48 Kg

4.2.6 Load Calculations under welded Conditions

Welding Parameters-Standard MIG Welding
Yield strength of Mild steel-250 Mpa
Fillet weld size-6mm, symmetrical fillet welds, Effective throat thickness-6mm
Shear strength of the weld,
S shear = 0.6x Yield strength of the base metal X Effective throat Thickness
Sshear = 0.6x 250 MPa x6 mm
=900 N/mm^2

4.2.5 Adequacy Check for Cantilever 50*50*6mm angle Loading Capacity under Welded
Conditions
Maximum Loading per 1.2 Meter <= Max. Loading Capacity @ 1.2m support spacing with
Fillet weld
416.67 N/mm <= 900 N/mm^2
Cantilever 50*50*6mm with Fillet weld of 6 mm is adequate.
