Task Card 2 - Analyzing Data
Task Card 2 - Analyzing Data
We worked together and “cleaned up the data” for another question, but we didn’t remove
outliers. In this Task Card, you will learn to further analyze the data. Plus, this Task Card gives
you a good review for Exam 1-type problems.
3. “Clean” the data by changing written answers to numbers and removing unclear answers.
Ex: “One brother and two sisters” becomes “3”
0,3,3,1,1,11,3,2,2,2,1,1,8,2,3,2,3,3,1,3,2,2,2,2,4,3,4,3,5,4,4,0,2,2,3,3,4,2,4,3,2,1
5. List any outliers. You may use any method including calculation or intuition to identify
them.
8 and 11 based off intuition.
6. Clean the data by removing those outliers. Make a new dot plot and paste it below.
7. Describe the shape of the data and give the final sample size
The Data forms a bell shape with the final sample size being 40.
8. Compute the numerical summary: Stat>Summary Stats and cut and paste below
9. What would you say is the typical number of siblings? Explain your answer based on the
graph and data.
The typical number of siblings is 2. My answer is based on the data of the Median as you can
not have .4 of a sibling if we were to use something like the mean instead.
10. Is there a lot of variation or not a lot of variation? Give at least one reason for your answer.
Explain your answer based on the graph and data.
There is a fair amount of variation based on the data as you can see the bell shaped
curve in the graph is very wide and not narrow. If it was narrow it would indicate that the
majority of the data would be present in close proximity but we have the opposite here.
