Chemistry Science Fair Project

Goal: Students will create a science fair-like presentation with a demo or model that details one
of the concepts that we covered, or did not cover, in class.

Details:
● This assignment is due on 5/31, and we will complete a gallery walk to present and grade.
● It is split into two parts:
○ 20 pts in the Assessments category for the completion of your project.
○ 20 pts in the Participation category for presenting and completing the gallery
walk.
● I will award 20 pts extra credit (in Concept Development) for also turning your
demo/model into a science kit that you could give to a middle school. It must
contain:
○ All materials.
○ Clear and concise instructions.
○ Any lab safety concerns.

Requirements: Your presentation MUST include the following.

1. A trifold board that details the following
a. Materials and procedure.
b. Details of the demo or model including any chemical reactions involved and/or a
list of properties. This is where you should describe the concept that you are
demonstrating.
c. The results of a demo and/or the purpose of the concept.
2. A model (e.g. an atomic model) or a demo (e.g. one of the experiments we did in class)
that details a specific concept that was covered, or not covered, in class.

Splitting Work: Below are some suggestions to evenly split the group with your group.
● Split the costs for materials.
● Assign one flap of the tri-fold board to one group member. The fourth member can act as
a flex for all three.
● Assign specific members to print materials.

Agenda: I suggest that you follow the daily pacing guide to ensure you are on track for finishing
on time.
● Wednesday 5/18: Decide on a concept to present.
● Monday 5/23: Finalize your decision, assign roles, and draw a rough draft. Buy some
materials after school.
● Tuesday 5/24: Create a layout on your trifold board and print (I can print during my prep
period or you can go to the library). Buy some materials after school.
● Wednesday 5/25: Start pasting materials onto the poster board and finalize the
organization of it. Aim to have all materials by this date.
● Thursday 5/26: Continue pasting materials and start testing your experiment. I highly
recommend you test it at least twice.
● Friday 5/27: Finalize your poster board, and make sure that your experiment is running
smoothly. Prepare the presentation for Monday 5/31.
