In the bustling infrastructure of educational institutions and even in modern society, amidst the towering buildings
and buzzing streets, there exists a group of unsung heroes, often overlooked but essential to the functioning of our
communities: the utility workers.

Utility school workers play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of essential services
within educational institutions. From managing electrical systems, cleaning the surroundings, servicing students to
maintaining plumbing infrastructure, these skilled individuals contribute to creating safe and functional environments
conducive to learning. Their dedication and expertise are instrumental in supporting the daily operations of schools,
helping to uphold standards of safety, efficiency, and comfort for students and staff alike.

Additionally, in modern society: utility workers form the backbone of our infrastructure, ensuring that the vital
services we often take for granted, such as electricity, water, gas, and sanitation, flow seamlessly into our homes, schools,
and workplaces.

They play a crucial role in ensuring public safety and environmental sustainability. They adhere to strict
regulations and protocols to mitigate risks associated with their work, whether it involves handling the transportations of
students, operating heavy machinery, or working in confined spaces. Additionally, utility workers are increasingly
involved in implementing eco-friendly practices and technologies, such as renewable energy initiatives and water
conservation measures, to minimize environmental impact and promote sustainability for future generations.

Their work touches every aspect of our daily lives. As we reflect on the indispensable role they play, let us
express our gratitude and appreciation for their service, recognizing them as the backbone of our infrastructure and the
guardians of quality of our life.

As part of our task in this subject, our work immersion teacher instructed us to observe and conduct interviews
with at least three utility workers at Mother Margherita de Brincat Catholic School, INC. As of March 5, 2024, our group
has scheduled the interview process to begin. To expedite the task, it was planned for us to divide into three groups. In the
first group there were Venus Anne Dreck, Rein Mikyla Agbuya, Renz Aguilar Cruz and Timothy John Garcia to interview
and observe the guard. The second group includes Mia Noreen Salenga, Josses Razon and Jhensey Binongo who were
assigned to watch and speak with our school caretaker. The last group were Janessa Frizzia Visaya, Guilharry Loney and
Dorothea Mae Malit that will interview and observe one of the Canteen Crew. Following a discussion of this approach,
the group got ready to write on the facts that the utility workers would divulge, create the questions, prepared the
recording equipments and photos for documentation.

Mary Rose Apostol Dizon, the canteen crew member that the third group decided to watch, was later discovered
loitering in the school hut. Dizon, who is fifty years old, works at the school canteen, gym, and hallway. She was among
the initial workers of MMDBCSI and has been a pioneer for the past eighteen years. During the interview, she stated that
her area of expertise was the servicing in canteen, where she worked for eight hours. She claimed that she found out about
the employment here since the former principal of MMDBCSI advised it to her. Dizon said she attends in the premises
before six in the morning and stays until three in the afternoon. Ultimately, she stated that her child, who is a student here,
and the younger pupils are the one who ignite her motivation to keep on working here. The third group thanked her after
the interview and convened to discuss the data they had collected.

Day 02 (Canteen Crew)

Every free moment and after lessons are over, the group
heads straight to the canteen to watch Mary Rose Dizon, the canteen
personnel. One of the group saw that the canteen crew was already
working at exactly 7:00 in the morning. On March 06, the second
day of their inspection, the group observed Mrs. Dizon preparing
and cooking food in the school cafeteria. After several hours, we
had another chance to watch her in action during the group's break
time. This time, we observed her serving every students who made a
purchase in the cafeteria and then, when one of our subjects was
vacant, we spotted her mopping in the hallway. We also saw that she immediately heads to the hut to relax and socialize
with the other canteen crew members whenever she has free
time. The canteen closed at 2:00 pm. and the remarks made by
Mrs. Dizon at the group interview with her— match, but with
the exception that she left early on this date.

Day 03 (Canteen Crew)

Almost the same thing

happened on days 2 and 3
of the group observation;
perhaps this is now the
standard procedure for all
Mother Margherita de

Incorporated canteen staff
members after all the years they spend here—this became their routine.
The group saw Mrs.Dizon getting ready about 6-7 a.m. with other canteen personnel preparing lunch for each student. The
group could now see her sweeping the gym rather than the hallway. During her leisure time, she returned to the hut and
talked with her coworkers and other utility workers. Mrs. Dizon did her work well, as it was on the second day, but she
also left earlier today than she should have, according to the interview.

Day 01 (Security Guard)

School security guards

play a crucial role in
maintaining the safety of
everyone inside the school.
They secure premises and
personnel by patrolling
property, investigating security
breaches, incidents, and other
alarming behavior, and controlling traffic by directing drivers. Jerwin Mallari, a 46-year-old security guard, has been
employed at Mother Margherita Catholic School Inc. for 5 months. He works at school from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is
responsible for monitoring and guarding the front/entrance gate. During the interview, he stated that aside from the
security guard's light work, what motivated him to work as a security guard was that it was his job before he decided to
work outside the country. He is now working for an agency and was assigned to MMdBCSI.

On the second day of observation, March 2024, the first

group continued to observe Mr. Mallari. During our break time,
we observed that Mr. Mallari was already in the guard house.
He was doing his usual routine, such as checking the IDs,
guarding the gate, and interacting with students and other school
personnel. At noon, around lunchtime, we noticed that lunch
break was one or perhaps the most exhausting part of their day.
This is where they have to deal with hard-headed students who
want to buy food outside the school. He refuses to let them leave
the school for it is the instruction of the school authorities.

Day 03 (Security Guard)

The same thing

happened on the third
day of observation. He
arrives on the
premises at 9 a.m.,
checks the students,
and asks them about
their sections and
schedules in case they
are late. He greets
everyone and makes small talk with some students he knows. While everyone is in their classroom, he opens the gate for
vehicles and greets them with a warm smile. After several hours, when it is time for dismissal, he won't let the students
leave unless it is their scheduled time or they have a letter from the adviser that they are allowed to leave.

Day 01 (School Caretaker)

On March 20, 2024, we had the privilege of interviewing Mr.

John Parayno, affectionately known as “Kuya Bong”, a dedicated
worker designated at the convent, elementary department, and school
grounds. At 54 years old, Kuya Bong has been diligently serving the
school for eight years now, starting his day promptly at 6:00 AM and
ending it at 6:00 PM. He works 6 days in a week from Monday to
Saturday. Kuya Bong's responsibilities encompass a range of tasks,
from collecting and sorting recyclable materials to watering plants.
His commitment to his work is deeply rooted in his faith, “Dito ako
dinala ni Lord”, as he expressed that he believes the divine guided
him to this school.

When asked about his choice to work at the school, Kuya

Bong attributed it to a higher calling, affirming that he was led here
by the Lord. His devotion to his job stems from a sense of duty to
both his employer and his family.

Interestingly, Kuya Bong's ideal job lies in construction work,

a profession he previously pursued before finding his place within the

school's community. It was through his past involvement in construction projects at the school that he caught the attention
of the sisters, ultimately leading to his employment.

Day 02 (School Caretaker)

Kuya Bong is a dedicated and responsible individual who

follows a well-structured daily routine. On the second day, despite the
scorching heat, Kuya Bong patiently waited for the other cleaners to
gather the garbage before proceeding to collect and sort through it
meticulously. He started his day early, at 5:30 am, to commute to
work. At break time, our team saw him at the back of the Senior High
School building sorting the garbages gathered by the cleaners. He also
took a 30-minute break from 9:30 to 10:00 am to have a snack and
rest. Despite his busy schedule, he manages to find time to assist with
household chores from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. In the afternoon, before
we went home, we also saw him watering plants at the elementary
department.

Day 03 (School Caretaker)

Moving on to
Day 3, Kuya Bong's diligence was even more evident. He tirelessly
carried out his assigned tasks, regardless of the time of day or the
sweltering heat. Whether it was morning, noon, or afternoon, he
could be seen tirelessly disposing of garbage, often clad in long
sleeves to protect himself from the sun's rays. At break time, our
team saw him having his rest and at that point, we had the chance to
ask him additional questions. We asked him his strengths and
weakness, how he socializes with his co-workers and, what was the
most difficult task assigned to him.

One of Kuya Bong's strengths is his time management

skills, allowing him to balance work, family, and personal time
effectively. According to him, he understands the importance of
spending quality time with his family, even after a tiring day at work.
Additionally, Kuya Bong also demonstrates good behavior and
teamwork in the workplace, showing respect and cooperation with
his colleagues.

”’Yung pinakamahirap is yung pagtitrim ng Bonguavilia,

kasi matinik na halaman ito, pati na rin pagpuputol ng sanga ng
puno, pagduduty sa gabi every monday, pagsakay sa bus service kasi
maraming disgrasya sa kalsada.(Pero salamat sa Panginoon kasi
andyan sya lagi para gumabay at mag iingat sa atin sa araw araw)”, these are his exact words when we asked him about
the most difficult task that he does every day.

Aside from them, we also had the

chance to interview Ronel de Sotto, a
45-year-old administrative staff, who has
been working diligently for 9 years. His
journey began as a driver, inspired by
his cousin, eventually leading him to his
current office-based role. Kuya Ronel's
primary responsibility is managing bill
payments, showcasing his reliability and
attention to detail.

Despite his official 8-hour workday, Kuya Ronel often extends his hours to ensure that tasks are completed
efficiently. His commitment to his job is evident in his punctuality, often arriving early and ready to start his day promptly
at 8:00 am. He takes a brief coffee break and then proceeds to complete his tasks, occasionally leaving the school
premises for work-related errands.

While Kuya Ronel's work is outside the school, making it challenging for us to observe him, we have noticed his
dedication and professionalism. His colleagues are a source of motivation for him, encouraging him to excel in his role
and remain a valuable member of the team.

Despite the difficulties in coordinating observations due to his off-site tasks and conflicting schedules, Kuya
Ronel's commitment to his work and positive attitude towards his responsibilities are commendable. He serves as an
inspiration to his colleagues and a model employee in his workplace.

CONCLUSION
Canteen Crew

Canteen crews are integral to the smooth functioning of food service facilities in various settings like Mother
Margherita de Brincat Catholic School Incorporated. Their responsibilities encompass ensuring food safety and hygiene,
maintaining quality and efficiency in operations, fostering customer satisfaction, and contributing to the overall well-
being of the community they serve.

Mrs. Dizon demonstrated that her job extended beyond the cafeteria and included cleaning the school's gym and
hallways. We also saw throughout our observation that a person can continue in her employment for an extended period
of time with the assistance of their acquaintances who later become part of their everyday life. To the students at
MMDBCSI, and to Dizon's fellow utility workers who are likewise working hard to sustain their life. Without the
dedication and hard work of canteen crews, the provision of nutritious meals and the positive impact on employee morale
and productivity would be compromised. Thus, recognizing the importance of canteen crews highlights the essential role
they play in supporting healthy, efficient, and enjoyable dining experiences for all students.

Security Guard

Security guards are essential in maintaining the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff within school
premises. They serve as a deterrent to potential threats, reducing the risks of violence, trespassing, and unauthorized
activities. In addition, security guards contribute to fostering a sense of trust and security within the school community,
enabling students to focus on their academic pursuits without any fear or distraction. Mr. Mallari is a testament for this.
By being vigilant, implementing security protocols, and collaborating with school administrators and law enforcement
when necessary, they help create a secure and conducive learning environment that is essential for the overall success and
welfare of students.

School Caretaker

School caretakers play a vital role in supporting the educational mission of schools by maintaining a safe, clean,
and functional environment for teaching and learning. Upon observing Kuya Bong, we realized how determined he is to
his work. Kuya Bong didn't just do his job; he showed true dedication. He made sure every bit of trash was properly
thrown away, even if he had to walk far to reach the bins. His commitment, even when it was tough, shows what kind of
person he is. Kuya Bong's hard work doesn't just keep the school clean, it inspires others too. In short, Kuya Bong's strong
work ethic, perseverance, and dedication make him incredibly valuable to the school. He sets a great example of hard
work and service.
