Time: 3 Hours Maximum: 80 Marks

Part A
Answer any ten questions. Each question carries 2 marks.

1. What you mean by testing of hypothesis?

2. Define parameters of a population

3. Define sampling distributions

4. Define statistical hypothesis

5. Give the critical regions in testing the mean of a normal population using large sample
and known standard deviation

6. Give the estimate of unkown standard deviation in testing the equality of two popula-
tion means.

7. Give the test statistic in testing the homogeneity of samples

8. Obtain the sample mean and sample variance of 12,14,17,21, 24

9. Give the value of the test statisitc to test the mean of a population is 25. Given sample
size is 20, sample mean is 28 and sample SD is 2.5

10. Differentiate between independent and dependent sample tests for eqaulity of means

11. Give the F test statisitc in testing the equality of standard deviations of two populations

12. Define degrees of freedom

(10×2=20)

Part B
Answer any six questions. Each question carries 5 marks.

13. Explain types of error in hypothesis testing using a decision table

14. Explain significance level and express Power of a test in terms of probability of Type
II error

15. Give the test procedure of testing mean of a normal population with unknown standard
deviaton. Given n = 50

16. 58 out of 250 insects were died when a certain chemical applied on them. Do the data
consistent with the claim that more than 25% of insects will die in the future use of
the chemical

17. 15 out of 60 men from city A are unemployed and 25 out of 90 men from city B are
unemployed. Do the data conforms to the claim that city B have more unemployed
men.

18. From the following data on hair and eye colour can it be said that there is a significant
association between hair and eye colour
Hair Colour
Light Brown
Eye Colour Light 35 15
Dark 16 23
19. List the applications of Snedecor’s F and Students t distributions

20. Two samples taken from normal populations gave the following results. Do the samples
come from same population?
Sample Size Mean S.D
12 1000 65
9 980 70
21. A sample of size 17 from a normal population has standard deviation 8. Do the claim
that the population standard deviation is more than 8.5 is acceptable

22. Explain in detail the steps involved in statisitcal hypothesis testin with suitable graphs

23. The marks of 50 students in a college has an average of 46 and that of 60 students in
another college has an average 48. If the population standard deviations are found to
be 2.5 each, do the marks differ significantly

24. Following are the observations when a die is tossed 120 times. Do the data indicate
that the die is unbiased
Face 1 2 3 4 5 6
Frequency 17 23 25 15 18 22
25. The weights of 5 mice before taking a medicine was 125, 132, 135, 125 and 129 gm.
After taking the medicine their weights are found to be 127, 133, 135, 130 and 133 gm.
Does the application of medicine resulted an increase in weight
