Abortion - Position Paper

The document discusses abortion and argues that it is unethical and should be illegal. It defines abortion and outlines opposing viewpoints from pro-life and pro-choice activists. ABORTION

Abortion is defined as the induced expulsion of a fetus from the womb before it is
capable of surviving on its own. Abortion is a highly contentious topic because it involves
religious beliefs and women's rights. Pro-life activists oppose abortion mostly because they think
that all life is sacred and entrusted to us by God. Pro-choice activists believe abortion is
appropriate since it is a woman's body and she has the right to do anything she wants with it. I
believe that abortion is unethical, morbid, and should be illegal. It is unlawful, and millions of
babies die as a result of it, never having seen the beauty of the world.

Abortion is murder because it steals the life of an unborn child, and it should not be a
choice for a woman who discovers she is pregnant. According to Merriam-Webster, the
definition of murder is "to kill a human being." The fact that life begins at conception is common
knowledge. If killing a human being at any stage of life is murder, then abortion, or the murder of
a fetus, is clearly immoral, because murder is one of the ethical absolutes. On day twenty-two,
an embryo's heart develops and begins to beat, and many women are unaware that they are
pregnant. A heartbeat, no matter how small the infant, represents life, and no one should be
allowed to terminate a life that is pure and innocent. Moreover, according to Marquis, abortion is
extremely morally wrong because it is an act of killing a being with a right to life, and killing a
being with a right to life is seriously immoral because it robs that being of their future, particularly
a future of high value like ours. No one, not even a mother, has the authority to harm another
person. To prohibit a child who is unable to communicate from developing and living is murder.

According to Mona Charen, “Sure, a woman has the right to decide whether or not to
have a child. She makes that decision before participating in sexual activity. Making that
'decision' after a pregnancy has begun only for the purpose of birth control is immoral”. A
woman who chooses to have sex is taking a risk. She is acting of her own volition and is in
complete control of her actions. If a person chooses to have sex, whether, with protection or not,
she is responsible for the outcome and must be willing to accept the consequences. Getting
pregnant is one such effect. Even if the pregnancy is unwanted or unplanned, a woman's
pregnancy is usually the product of her own choices.

Suppose a woman did not voluntarily assume the risk of becoming pregnant and hence
had no control over the pregnancy perhaps she has been raped, for example. In this case, she
might have the right to abort her child but still, it is wrong. At a lecture at Vanderbilt University,
America, a medical student claimed that abortion constitutes the second act of violence against
a raped woman, adding that her "abortion was worse than the rape". Pregnancy can be
punishing but a child is not a punishment. While in prison, a convicted rapist should not have
paternal rights or be allowed to demand visitation from "his" children but he should pay child
support. Both victims, the woman, and her child deserve unconditional support.

A study in the Eastern Journal of Medicine states that abortion can cause post-traumatic
stress disorder, depression, and interpersonal relationship issues. The cause for the abortion,
the type of medical treatment, the length of the pregnancy, as well as personal, social,
economic, religious, and cultural elements that define the woman's attitude about abortion are
all important aspects that influence psychological repercussions. Women who choose abortion
are more likely to have physical issues such as pain, discomfort, bleeding, infection, and, in rare
circumstances, injury to internal organs or adverse drug responses. Abortion can not only harm
the baby but can also inflict physical and psychological damage.

Furthermore, many religions oppose the idea of abortion. Christianity considers abortion
to be a sin in all situations, while Hinduism views it as a kind of violence. The Catholic Church's
official teachings oppose all forms of abortion procedures whose direct purpose is to destroy a
zygote, blastocyst, embryo, or fetus since it holds that "human life must be respected and
protected absolutely from the moment of conception, a human being must be recognized as
having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to
life". No one may claim the authority to kill an innocent person because only God can make that
decision. This is found in both Matthew 5:21 and Exodus 23:7 of the Bible: "You shall not kill"
(Mt 5:21) and "Do not slay the innocent and the righteous" (Ex 23:7). Man's right to life should
not be taken away from any innocent person, regardless of the circumstances. The fifth
commandment's objective is to underline the importance of human life and to ensure that it is
respected in the lives of those who follow the moral rule. God gave man life so that he would
value and encourage it, rather than see it as an item and not a gift.

To summarize, abortion, like murder, is extremely unethical. Abortion is always wrong

because the fetus is a potential human being from conception. If the mother did not want the
child or was unable to care for the infant, she should not become pregnant in order to kill the
unborn child in her womb later. It cannot only have a mental and physical impact on the child but
also on the mother. Abortion, after all, is the murder of a human being in violation of God's law.
All humans have the right to life; it is the essence of human existence and is inherent in human
nature. Killing beings who, if they lived, would have a similar future to us is tremendously evil.
