Abstract
Cost management plays a crucial role in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, ensuring
successful project delivery within budget constraints. This article compares the traditional approach to cost
management with the utilization of 5D-BIM (Building Information Modelling). The traditional cost management
practices will be examined in detail, including cost estimation, cost planning, cost budgeting, and cost control.
Additionally, the paper will explore the different phases of cost management and how they can be enhanced through
the implementation of 5D-BIM.
Highlighting the significance of cost management in the AEC industry, this paper emphasizes the need for accurate
cost estimation, planning, budgeting, and control. It showcases the benefits of effective cost management, such as
project cost optimization, improved financial forecasting, and enhanced decision-making throughout the project
lifecycle.
Furthermore, the paper delves into the potential advancements brought about by the integration of 5D-BIM in cost
management. It defines each traditional cost management practice and discusses how 5D-BIM can revolutionize their
execution. The utilization of 5D-BIM enables stakeholders to visualize and analyze cost-related information
dynamically and interactively, facilitating more informed decision-making.
A survey or questionnaire was conducted to assess the industry's awareness and adoption of 5D-BIM. The results
revealed a lack of knowledge and limited usage of 5D-BIM, indicating a gap that needs to be addressed. This
highlights the importance of increasing education and awareness about 5D-BIM to harness its potential in cost
management fully.
In conclusion, this paper provides insights into the importance of cost management in the AEC industry and the
potential benefits of integrating 5D-BIM into traditional cost management practices. It underscores the need for
industry professionals to embrace this technology and highlights the potential advantages of accurate cost estimation,
planning, budgeting, and control that can be realized through the utilization of 5D-BIM.

Keywords: Construction projects; cost management; cost estimation; cost control; building information modeling; 5D.
