Definition of Trigonometry
Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics
that studies relationships between side
lengths and angles of triangles. The field
emerged in the Hellenistic world during the
3rd century BC from applications of
geometry to astronomical studies.
History Of Trigonometry
By the 10th century, Islamic mathematicians were using all
six trigonometric functions, had tabulated their values, and
were applying them to problems in spherical geometry. The
Persian polymath Nasir al-Din al-Tusi has been described as
the creator of trigonometry as a mathematical discipline in
its own right.
Systematic study of trigonometric functions began in
Hellenistic mathematics, reaching India as part of Hellenistic
astronomy. In Indian astronomy, the study of trigonometric
functions flourished in the Gupta period, especially due to
Aryabhata (sixth century CE), who discovered the sine
function.
Father Of Trigonometry
mathematician Hipparchus
The first known table of chords was produced by
the Greek mathematician Hipparchus in about 140
BC. Although these tables have not survived, it is
claimed that twelve books of tables of chords were
written by Hipparchus. This makes Hipparchus the
founder of trigonometry.
Right Angle Triangle
A right triangle or right-angled triangle, or more
formally an orthogonal triangle, is a triangle in
which one angle is a right angle. The relation
between the sides and other angles of the right
triangle is the basis for trigonometry. The side
opposite to the right angle is called the
hypotenuse.
Trigonometry Ratios
1) Sine (sin)
2) Cosine (cos)
3) Tangent (tan)
4) Secant (sec)
5) Cosecant (cosec)
6) Cotangent (cot)
The Values Of Ratios
Angle/Ratio 0* 30* 45* 60* 90*
sinθ 0 1/2 1/√2 √3/2 1
1.sin2A + cos2A = 1
2.tan2A + 1 = sec2A
3.cot2A + 1 = cosec2A
Applications Trigonometry
Trigonometry is used to set directions such as the
north south east west, it tells you what direction to
take with the compass to get on a straight direction.
It is used in navigation in order to pinpoint a location.
It is also used to find the distance of the shore from
a point in the sea.
