NOTE MAKING
1. Read the following passage carefully and afterwards make a summary of it in NOTE-
FORM. In your summary:
a. Produce a suitable title for the passage
b. Give main points
c. Supply supporting points for each main point.
Marks will be awarded for content, not-style and fair copy layout. Candidate who simply

Computer technology has and is still developing at a very fast rate. Owing to this, most
services which were initially performed manually by man are now done more efficiently
and much quicker by a computer. In some fields, computers have wholesomely
substituted man while in other; they have just cut down the human resource requirement.
The areas where computers are used considerably are as follows.
Computers have assisted quite much in various financial systems. Most notable areas in
financial systems include the field of accounting. Most organizations have computerized
their accounting systems. Using computers, financial departments are able to produce
financial statements quickly and with accuracy. Accounting information like debtors
balances can be produced on demand. Computers have also brought revolution in the
banking systems. They have installed Auto-Teller Machines which help clients withdraw
money and check balances. The computers also assisted banks to operate on a network.
As a result people can transact with any branch of their bank and get instant information
about their accounts.
The second area in which the advert of computer technology has shown its successes is in
the communication systems. It has cut down on the time it took to send a message from
one point to another. The internet has made it possible to send electronic mails from one
part of the globe and the recipient gets it instantly. The fax facility also help to send hard
copy documents and it reaches the recipient instantly. Video conferencing is another
facility in communication systems that has cut down the cost of transport and time. It
enables people from different parts to conduct just as if they are physically face to face.
Computer technologies have also assisted much in the transport systems. Those who
move on aero planes in the air, computers facilitate the communication between plane
pilots and control towers. The black boxes installed on air planes help retrieve the
information in case of security investigations. Another technology useful in transport is
the traffic control lights. These lights when installed automatically control road traffic.

Car tracking technologies also enable individuals to locate their cars in a particular area
in case they are stolen. Previously all these tasks were performed manually.
Lastly, computers are also used in the area of entertainment in several ways. They are
used to design software and hardware for games. Secondly, computer users are able to
play various games on these computers. In addition, with the coming in of digital cameras
and video editing software, people are able to make and watch home videos quite easily.
The advert of computers has eased a number of challenges that seemed complicated to
man. With this simplicity that computers have brought, it has made stakeholders to
computerize most of their activities in different field where people work.

Section B (40 marks)

Comprehension
2. Read the following passage carefully and answer all the questions that follow.
Since the beginning of time people have had the burning desire to explore unknown
territory, seek out new lands and go where no one has gone before. Men such as Lewis
and Clark and Neil Armstrong have inspired us all to expand our boundaries. These men
have risked injury, humiliation, and even death. I have been one of these men, and this is
my story.
The summer before my senior year in high school, the feeling of invincibility had already
set in. I was working as a camp counselor at a park called “Castle Rock,” named after a
gargantuan stone deep inside the park. Every Friday my best friend Keith would drive
down and visit. We would spend the time hiking trails behind the park. Every time we
passed Castle Rock, we admired its size and majesty and discussed how wonderful it
would be to climb – all the while knowing we were too scared to actually make an
attempt. And every time, Castle Rock would look us in the eye and mock our cowardice.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. We were going to climb the rock or die trying. Now
this rock was huge, almost five stories in height-mostly vertical, with a slight slope about
three-quarters of the way up. Keep in mind that Keith and I had no experience rock

climbing, let alone did we have the proper equipment. We both knew that a mistake on
this rock mean death, but that wasn’t going to stop us.
The morning of the climb I loaded my backpack with food, water and an old rope I found
in the garage. I don’t know why I brought the rope; it just seemed like a good idea for
rock climbing. We hiked a short way to the base and, without saying a word, solemnly
made our way up the rock. I went first; Keith followed. The climb was surprisingly easy.
Keith and I both started wondering what we’d been so scared of. Then, about three-
quarters of the way up, I stuck. There were no hand-holds within a reasonable distance.
Fortunately, there was a small ledge right above me. Unfortunately, the only possible way
I could reach it was to let go of everything I was hanging on to jump up, and grab the
ledge. My shaking body and aching shoulder told me that no other choice. Mustering all
the spring in my legs, I jumped, grabbed the ledge, and pulled myself to safety. After
saying a quick prayer, I turned around to guide Keith through the maneuver.
Keith, however, is a little bit shorter than I am. When he jumped, he missed the ledge and
began sliding down the rock. Just before he reached the falling-off point, Keith found a
hand-hold and hung on to it with all his might. Good news! I had a rope! I threw off my
backpack, untangled the rope, and threw it down to him. Bad news! It was too short. In
meantime Keith was yelling “hurry up, I am going to die!” I gathered the remaining slack
in the rope and threw it again. This time it reached Keith, and I pulled him to safety.
After what felt like an hour of shaking, we realized we had no way down; our only choice
was to keep climbing. Again, I went first, but I couldn’t find a path. However, Keith
somehow found a way and twenty minutes later we stood on top of the rock we had
conquered. There we were rewarded with a magnificent view of the valley-and the
knowledge that we had gone where no man had gone before.
Well, not quite looking behind a large rock, we spotted a trail that led to the summit on
which we were standing. Anyone could climb that trail. To console ourselves we decided
that taking a trail wasn’t nearly as much fun or as rewarding as climbing the rock’s face
had been.
Nevertheless, we thankfully took the trail down to safety. On the way back to the pack,
Keith and I argued about who was the better rock climber. I naturally said I was because I
had saved his life. Keith argued that he was the one who found the way up the rock.
Without him we’d still be stuck on the ledge. But, I reminded him, without me, he
wouldn’t have been on the ledge.

EXAMINATION NUMBER _____________________________

We decided to solve the argument with another climb-this time up a canyon wall. This
wall was relatively short and it was grooved, so there were plenty of hand-holds. The
agreement was simple; first one up the rock was the better climber. We started up. After
about ten feet I slipped and fell, spraining my ankle. I looked up and saw Keith still
climbing. No way could I let him beat me, so I started again. About halfway I heard
someone yelling. It was Keith, standing on the ground, telling me to come back down.
Then I realized why. The canyon wall, although it appeared solid, was actually hardened
dirt. The higher up the wall, the softer the dirt became. Nothing was said; I was stuck.
Now it was Keith’s turn to get the rope and help me lower to safety. We silently went
back to the back before either of us had another bright idea.
I have matured greatly since that day. I don’t climb rocks without equipment, nor do I
chance death just for the fun of it. But I learned two important principles; first, life
presents two types of rocks. One is tall and it appears scary and impossible to climb.
However, it is solid, and with perseverance we can make it to the top. The other is short
and rough. It appears to be an easy climb, but we eventually realize it isn’t solid and it
crumbles all around us. We can choose which rock we’ll climb. The second principle in
this: No matter which rock you climb, solid or the soft, you always take along a friend.

Jaffe)
