Prompt 1:
Primary and secondary education should focus on training students for the highly
specialized jobs of the future, rather than on providing them with a broad range of non-specificskills
and information.

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Supportyour
position with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Essay:
The issue of whether primary and secondary education should focus on specific skills or non
specific skills is a controversial one. On the one hand, offering a broad range of skills to students
will give them a variety of skills. On the other hand, providing students with specialized skills can
help then with specific jobs in the future. In my final analysis, I believe that education should focus
on providing a broad range of skills to students.

One reason for my belief is that if students do not learn a broad range of skills, they will not
know what they are good at. By forcing students to learn specific skills for a specific job, they are
being restricted from learning all types of skills. For example, if a student is not sure what he wants
to do in the future, by forcinghim to learn specific skills, he is not allowed to figure out where he
would like to go in his careerpath. By offering him a broad range of skills, he will also be qualified
for more jobs and has morechoices. He will not be restriced to certain types of jobs.

Another reason for my belief is gaining broad range of non-specific skills will provide students
with all types of skills and therefore they will be better informed about these skills and what types
of jobs require certain skills. If they do decide after acquiring these skills what they would like to
do, they can then get further schooling to gear them towards highly specialized jobs. First time
employees also get experience on the job itself. To give students the skills of all types of jobs, it
allows them to find out what they are good at and what they enjoy. They can always get specific
skills and education once they have figured what the best path is for them.

Perhaps the best reason is that a broad range of non-specified skills and information is
appealing to all students in that they will be getting a variety of skills. This way no students are
forced to learn one type of skill for a specialized job. I believe that this will encourage students to
find their niche and give them exposure to different types of classes and skills. In the end, they
will be better prepared for their future.

For all these reasons, I therefore believe that providing students with a broad range of non
specific skills rather than specific skills for a job is beneficial. It allows the students to learn what
they are good at on their own without restricting them in any way.
