What’s New

Selecting the winners in a Quiz bee, academic awardees, best TV and

radio shows personalities, most valuable player, and the best products and
brands are just some of the real-life problems wherein we can use Measures
of Central Tendency. Nowadays, the winners in some of the contests that you
will see in the social media can be easily identified by just checking the
contestant that has the most number of likes or hearts and comments. Even
you, can easily find out if the general average of your grades has passed or
been qualified for the academic awards. So, come on and let us find out how
to do this!

A Measure of Central Tendency is a summary statistic that represents the center

point or typical value of a dataset. These measures indicate where most values in a distribution
fall and are also referred to as the central location of a distribution. You can think of it as the
tendency of data to cluster around a middle value.

In statistics, the three most common Measures of Central Tendency are

the mean, median, and mode. Each of these measures calculates the location of the central
point using a different method.

MEAN

The mean (also known as the average) is the most commonly used measure of
central tendency. It is used to describe a set of data where the measures cluster or
concentrate at a point. As the measures cluster around each other, a single value appears
to represent distinctively the typical value.

It is the sum of all the values of x divided by the number of n values in the observation
and denoted by x ̅ ( read as ”x bar” ).
To find the mean of an ungrouped data, use the formula:

x1 +x2 +x3 +…+xn

𝐱̅ =
n
where: 𝐱̅ = mean
x = given data
n = number of values in the observation

5
Illustrative Example 1:

The grades in Statistics of 10 students are 87, 84, 85, 85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, 76.
What is the average grade?

Solution:
x1 +x2 +x3 +…+xn
𝐱̅ =
n
87 + 84 + 85 +85 +86 + 90 + 79 + 82 + 78 + 76
𝐱̅ =
10
832
𝐱̅ = 10

𝐱̅ = 83.2
Interpretation: The average grade of the 10 students is 83.2.

Illustrative Example 2:

The mean age of five boys is 16 years old. If their ages (in years) are 15 , 18 , 14 , and
19. Find the age of the fifth boy.

Solution:
Given 𝐱̅ = 16
Let x5 = the age of the fifth boy in years
Using the Equation
x1 +x2 +x3 +x4 + x5
𝐱̅ =
5
16 = 15 + 18 + 14 + 19 + x5
5
(16)(5) = 66 + x5
80 = 66 + x5
x5 = 80 – 66
x5 = 14.
The age of the fifth boy is 14 years old.

MEDIAN

The median is the middle value that splits the dataset in half. To find the median:

1. arrange data from smallest to largest or vice versa; and

2. find the data point that has an equal amount of values above and below it.

6
The method for locating the median varies slightly depending on whether your dataset
has an even or odd number of values.
Illustrative Example 1:

The grades in Statistics of 9 students are 84, 85, 85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, 76.
What is the median?

Solution:
1. Arrange from smallest to largest or vice versa.

76 78 79 82 84 85 85 86 90

2. Since the number of data set is odd (n=9), there’s only one middle value. Observe
that there are exactly 4 values before 84 and 4 values after it.

76 78 79 82 84 85 85 86 90 ( smallest to largest )

90 86 85 85 84 82 79 78 76 ( largest to smallest )

The median of the given data is 84.

Interpretation: Half of the values are less than or equal to 84, and half of the values
are greater than or equal to 84.

Illustrative Example 2:

The grades in Statistics of 10 students are 87, 84, 85, 85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, 76.
What is the median?

Solution:
1. Arrange from smallest to largest or vice versa.

76 78 79 82 84 85 85 86 87 90

2. Find the middle value that has an equal amount of values. Since the data set is
even (n=10), we have 2 middle values.

76 78 79 82 84 85 85 86 87 90 ( from smallest to largest )

90 87 86 85 85 84 82 79 78 76 ( from largest to smallest )

7
3. When there is an even number of values, find the two middle scores and get the
average to get the median.

84+85 169
=
2 2
Md = 84.5
The median of the given data is 84.5.

Interpretation: Half of the values are less than or equal to 84.5, and half the
values are greater than or equal to 84.5.

MODE

The mode is the value that occurs the most frequent in your data set. On a bar chart,
the mode is the highest bar. If the data have 3 or more modes that have multiple values that
are occurring most frequently, you have a multimodal distribution. If no value repeats, the data
do not have a mode.

Illustrative Example 1:
The grades in Statistics of 10 students are 87, 84, 85, 85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, 76.
What is the mode?

Solution:
87, 84, 85, 85, 86, 90, 79, 82, 78, 76
The mode is 85 since it has the most frequency. This distribution is said to be unimodal
because it has only one mode.

Interpretation: 85 is the most common grade of the students in Statistics.

Illustrative Example 2:
The ages (in years) of eight Grade 7 students are 12, 13,12, 15, 12, 13, 14, and 13.
What is the mode?
Solution:
12, 12, 12,13, 13, 13, 14, 15
The modes are 12 and 13 because these are the ages that have the most frequency.
This distribution is said to be bimodal since it has two modes.

Interpretation: Most of the Grade 7 students are 12 and 13 years old.

8
Illustrative Example 3:
The five Grade 7 contestants’ scores in the Math Quiz Bee are 29, 32, 23, 45 and 38.
What is the mode?
Solution:
29, 32, 23, 45, 38
There is no mode because all frequencies are equal.

Interpretation: The scores of the five Grade 7 students in the Math Quiz Bee
are different from one another. Therefore, there is only one
winner in each place or rank.

When can we use the three measures of central tendency?

Mean can be used to identify the:

• general average and performance of the students;
• average income or expenses of a number of people;
• monthly temperature;
• average number of newly born babies or death rate everyday;
• average speed of anything; and many more.

Median can be used to identify the:

• central tendency of data that has extremely low or high values;
• distribution of the earnings or the salaries of middle class family;
• players height or the middle age from the class of students;
• admission grades of students in most universities; and many more.

Mode can be used to identify the:

• best TV or radio shows and personalities;
• number of games succeeded by any team of players;
• product, brand or company that has the most number of sales;
• winner as the most liked picture or video online;
• winner in any election; and many more.

11
LESSON
Measures of Central Tendency of
2 Grouped Data

In the previous lesson, you have learned how to find the measures of central tendency
of ungrouped data. In this lesson, you will learn all about the measures of central tendency of
grouped data.

What’s In

Have you ever wondered how your test scores were ranked
during the National Achievement Tests? What if you wanted to know
your place during a competition that includes all the grade 7 students
in your school? Or you were asked to collect the ages of students from
grade 7 to 10. These situations involve larger number of raw data and
it would be easier to look for the measure of central tendency once
they are grouped.

What’s New

The Measures of Central Tendency are very useful in our everyday life. The mean,
or the average is an important statistic used in finding the average grades of students. Sports
Coaches also use averages to determine how well a player is performing by his points in all
his games, while General Managers may use this to determine how good is the performance
of the business. The median is used in economics like the “median household income”. While,
the mode may be useful in business to identify the most commonly purchased or sold item/s
which need to have more stocks in the store and also in identifying the winners in any election.

Grouped data is when observations are placed into groups, normally into intervals of
some sort. Examples of grouped data include age, height, time, scores, and many more.

12
Illustrative Example :

Make a complete frequency distribution of table 2, then find the mean, median and
mode.

11-15 1 13 13 2 10.5
6-10 1 8 8 1 5.5
i=5 n= 20 ∑𝐟𝐱 = 520

Solutions:

Steps Solution
1) To find for the midpoint (x), find 36+40 31+35 6+10
the middle value of each class. x= = 38 ; = 33 … 2
=8
2 2
2) fx is equal to the product of fx = (2) (38) = 76
frequency (f) and midpoint (x)
(3) (33) = 99 … (1) (8) = 8
3) The <cf is the cumulative sum
<cf = 18+2 = 20
of the frequencies starting from
the lowest or highest class 15+3 = 18
interval. In this case, we started 8+7 = 15
from the lowest class interval, 6- 4+4 = 8
10 with the frequency of 1, then 2+2 = 4
add it to the next frequency, and 1+1 = 2
so on… =1
4) To find the Lb, subtract 0.5 from Lb = 36 – 0.5 = 35.5 ; 26 – 0.5 = 25.5 ...
the lower score of each class.
31 – 0.5 = 30.5 ; 6 – 0.5 = 5.5

13
5) To identify the interval (i), get
i = (40 - 36) +1 i = (35 - 31) +1 i = (10 - 6) +1
the difference of the higher and the
=4+1 =4+1 =4+1
lower class interval, then, add 1.
i=5 i=5 i=5
6) Find the total number of n = 2 + 3 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 1 + 1
participants or frequency (n) by = 20
adding all the frequencies.

7) Find the summation of fx (∑𝐟𝐱) ∑𝐟𝐱 = (76+99+196+92+36+13+8)

by adding all the values in column
fx. = 520

MEAN
When the data values have been grouped in a frequency distribution table, the mean
can be solved using the formula:

∑𝐟𝐱
𝐱̅ =
𝐧
where,
x = class mark or midpoint of a class interval
f = frequency
fx = the product of the frequency and midpoint
n = sum of all the frequencies or observations

Table 2.2

14
Steps Solution
1) Identify the values of n and ∑𝐟𝐱 from the 1) n = 20 and ∑𝐟𝐱 = 520
frequency distribution of table 2 above.

2) Substitute the values to the formula. ∑𝐟𝐱

Interpretation: The average score of the 20 students is 26 points.

MEDIAN
In solving the median of a grouped data, you need to arrange the class interval from
largest to smallest or vice versa. Then, use the formula below.
𝒏
– <𝐜𝐟
𝟐
Md = Lbmc+ [ ]i
𝐟𝐦𝐜

where:
mc = median class
n = sum of all the frequencies
Lbmc = lower boundary of median class
fmc = frequency of the median class
i = interval or class size
<cf = cumulative frequency before the median class.

Md = 26.93

Interpretation: Half of the 20 students have scores above 26.93 and half got scores
below it.

and the other half got below 26.93.

MODE

The mode can be solved from the class with the highest frequency which is called the
modal class (mo). In order to find it, you may use the formula:

𝐃𝟏
Mo = Lbmo + [ ]i
𝐃𝟏 + 𝐃𝟐

where:

mo = modal class
Lbmo = Lower boundary of the modal class
D1 = difference of the frequency of the modal class and the frequency of
the class before it
D2 = difference of the frequency of the modal class and the frequency of
the class after it
i = interval or class size

frequency while i is 5.
2) Determine the Lower boundary of the modal 2) (Lbmo) = 26 – 0.5
class (Lbmo) which is equal to the lower = 25.5
score minus 0.5.
3) D1 is the difference of the modal class 3) D1 = 7 – 4
frequency and the frequency before it. =3
4) D2 is the modal class frequency minus the 4) D2 = 7 – 3
frequency after it. =4

= 25.5 + [ ]5
3+4
3
= 25.5 + [ ] 5
7
= 25.5 + 2.14
Mo = 27.64

Interpretation: Most of the students in Grade 7 got the score of 27.64.

The results are mean = 26, median = 26.93, mode = 27.93. Based from it, the
scores all fall under the same class. In interpreting data on test results like this, the
mean is the most appropriate measure of central tendency because all the scores are
included.
Remember:
The measure of central tendency to be used depends on the type of data. The
mean and median can only have one value for a given data set while the mode can
have more than one value. For grouped data, we cannot find the exact mean, median
and mode, we can only give estimates.
